I keep starting to write something about breast cancer awareness month but I keep getting stuck. I will write something new but until I do this is a Substack piece I wrote last year. Since then some drugs have been approved but the amount of money invested in to research into stage 4 incurable breast cancer remains as low and 31 women in the uk are still dying from this disease every day. Yesterday I went to Parliament as a patient advocate for @breastcancernow

It’s the first time I have done something like this and I was honoured to be asked and proud to stand alongside my fellow breast cancer patient advocates. I’ve sat in a lot of waiting rooms since my diagnosis and I’m always aware of my privilege in being able to advocate for myself, in speaking English as a first language, in being able to make myself be heard. There are many that can’t do that so if I can I will, for me and for those that are unable to.

I spoke to MPs about the importance of screening and early detection. About the delays in scan results getting to patients. About how much that matters when you have an incurable disease. I spoke about the language we use - how I struggle being told I’m a brave fighter when this is my life. And about how cancer ripples out and touches the whole family.

I also talked about the government’s promise to start collecting – and publishing – data on how many people are currently living with metastatic (incurable, stage 4, secondary) breast cancer as we still don’t have data at a national level. I asked how, if we don’t know how many people live with secondary breast cancer, can we know how much to invest in treatments and resources? We can’t . And I told MPs that if you don’t count us it makes us feel like we don’t count.

Breast Cancer Now says that they are breast cancer now until they are breast cancer never – so we can’t stop until everyone with metastatic breast cancer is seen, counted and supported.

Thank you to my MP @tulipsiddiq for coming and taking the time to speak with me. I really appreciate it. And thanks to the others I spoke with too. Together we are stronger.
