I still haven’t fully wrapped my head around it. But the little girl who saw Tyler Perry talking on stage after watching Family Reunion the stage-play in the early 2000s and for the very first time saw someone that looked like her doing something she really wanted to do, just wrapped on directing her first full length stage play.

It was hard AF. I’m still decompressing from everything it took out of me to make it happen. AND, I’m grateful - for the opportunity, the talented actors that trusted me, and the Heavenly Father who so graciously gave me the gift of art and continues to grant me the opportunity to share it. ❤️ taken in Chicago, Illinois by @julisamarcel

There’s a specific kind of courage required to choose yourself — especially when the life you want looks different from what’s expected of you.

In the first episode of Noir in Media, I sat down with writer-director @julisamarcel to talk about building a creative career beyond societal expectations, leaving the Caribbean for Canada, navigating family pressure, and trusting your voice enough to pursue the life you truly want.

What started as a conversation between best friends became a deeper discussion about identity, resilience, storytelling, and what it really means to create your own path.
If you’ve ever questioned whether it’s “too risky” to pursue the thing you love, this episode is for you.

A few moments from @julisamarcel’s journey so far…

From the Virgin Islands 🇻🇮 to Toronto, Julisa has built a path rooted in storytelling, creativity, and purpose. With a background in independent film production, an MFA in Creative Writing from Queens University of Charlotte, and experience through programs like the OYA (@oyablackarts) Emerging Filmmakers Program and Hollywood Entertainment’s inaugural Women in Entertainment Mentorship, every step has strengthened her voice as a writer-director.

Passionate about telling nuanced, character-driven stories about Black girls and women she needed to see growing up, Julisa continues to create work grounded in honesty, identity, and lived experience.

This Thursday on Noir in Media, we unpack her journey, navigating family expectations while pursuing creative dreams, and the realities of building a career in film and television.

for some reason, getting new headshots feels incredibly profound right now - so as I watch the Oscars and dream big, I just pray that God helps me keep my heart soft in a world that seems dead set on hardening it. 🌷

I’m supposed to be on a social media break…BUT couldn’t let the year end without saying a huge thank you. NGL 2025 had handssssss 😭 But at the start of the year I said would shoot my first film as writer & director before the year was done. I definitely cut it close with this late November shoot, but we did it. 🤞🏾

Greatest gratitude to God, the giver of this gift, this love, and everything that has fallen into place to make this dream happen. And next greatest gratitude to every single person that joined in to put my imagination into film. Y’all are literally IT. ✨

And special special special shout out to my EP, mentor, and big sister in film and life, @sashaleighhenry whose refusal to be told what she’s capable of literally gave me the confidence to say I’m getting this done regardless. Love you long time. ❤️

That said, keep an eye out for my directorly debut, the monster i made, in 2026 🤞🏾
