That's a wrap on @culturecon 🤏🏾🤏🏾🤏🏾

This was the second year of CultureCon with my bestie @julisamarcel! This has become an annual trip that we absolutely love, and every time we leave, we feel more inspired and driven. As a Canadian at CultureCon 🇨🇦, you’re already a minority in such a big, bold, beautiful space, BUT I look at this event not for what it can do for me, but for what I can take away from it. I read between the lines at panels and workshops, find my key takeaways, and figure out how I can apply them when I go back home to Toronto.

I met some great creatives this year, and hopefully we can expand those networks and relationships even more!

S/O to THAT GIRL, @imaniimani! 🩷 I'm already looking forward to my return!

About last weekend….SWIPE.
@beyondthedoorplay

An experience I won’t soon forget. The story…TRUE story. The woman I portrayed @authordenisejones ….the dynamic leaders of this work @julisamarcel and Ms. Felicia P. Fields…and the players I got to play with onstage all summer. Young.Gifted. Some of us 4ever young! 😉 I will not forget the people or the lessons from this work. Thank you. 🙏🏾

To all who came out to journey & experience with us Beyond the Door…THANK Y’ALL! Extra special thanks to my parents who INSISTED on coming to all 3 shows. Your presence & support in errrr’thang I dip my being in means more than I can express here…I do not take it for granted. 💜💜

I’ve grown as an actor in this role and as a human being. Thank you Lord. 🙏🏾💜

Onward & Upward. #beyondthedoor #theatre #chicagotheatre #actorslife

The production Beyond The Door was PHENOMENAL!!! This was based on the true life story of @authordenisejones, author of “Who Said It Couldn’t Be Done?” and her mother Annie M. Freeman, author of “Can Anything Good Come Out Of The Westside.” Family secrets are generally kept quiet behind closed doors, regardless to the generational trauma they cause. This play exposed some of those deep-seated secrets in such an explosive manner that you couldn’t help but to be emotionally drawn in.

The cast was incredible! Shout out to actor Rita Wicks for giving such a powerful performance with her characters Annie Mae, Dirty O, and Sister Annie. She killed it! The musical selection from the 70s was spot on, and the Q&A was raw. I appreciate the message of redemption, forgiveness and perseverance, in spite of life’s sometimes insurmountable obstacles.

There’s a specific kind of courage required to choose yourself — especially when the life you want looks different from what’s expected of you.

In the first episode of Noir in Media, I sat down with writer-director @julisamarcel to talk about building a creative career beyond societal expectations, leaving the Caribbean for Canada, navigating family pressure, and trusting your voice enough to pursue the life you truly want.

What started as a conversation between best friends became a deeper discussion about identity, resilience, storytelling, and what it really means to create your own path.
If you’ve ever questioned whether it’s “too risky” to pursue the thing you love, this episode is for you.
