Hi!! I got sent this progress video the other day and I was actually thrilled at how much this skater had improved on their double axel in just a few months. Do you guys see the difference?!?

This short video only scratches the surface of the advice I gave to this skater. Since everything begins with the takeoff, I encouraged her to work first on her ‘wind-up’ position (as I call it). Pulling the left shoulder back allows her to twist her hips and shoulders against each other using that arm movement I pinpointed. This has two big benefits: It forces your upper body to twist over your right side, while simultaneously helping you push your hips up into the jump.

There are many ways you can use your arms in an axel, but since it was clear that this skater was having difficulty kicking outside of the circle I thought this technique would be beneficial for her (and that seems to be the case!)

Just to be clear this is NOT what a real video analysis from me looks like (editing is not my strong suit so this is quite rudimentary 😂). I use a real coaching/video analysis app and go much further into detail. Each video usually comes out between 10-20 minutes long and I use side by side comparison and various drawing/measuring tools to help break down technique! If you’re interested at all feel free to reach out over DM or see my pinned post for more info!

I had a wildly successful practice yesterday and got to cross a few items off my 2025 skating goals so it got me thinking about how much has gone into this 1A + 2T combo.

First, progress is SO not linear. Looking at the dates between these you can see how spaced out some of my bigger achievements are. There’s been times where I felt like I was making zero progress, and there’s other days like yesterday where I feel literally unstoppable. The key is consistent practice and knowing when to step back and focus on the fundamentals, even if it takes a lot of trust and patience. I may go back to the rink tomorrow and have lost everything, but there’s no replacement for showing up and trying.

Looking back at these videos, it’s really interesting to see how these jumps have developed from nothing into something I had only dreamed of landing. I’ll relish in this feeling of accomplishment for now, but I also know that for every high, there’s a low waiting that I’ll have to push through. Without the lows, the highs wouldn’t have such a nice view 🌄

At long last I have finally made another tutorial 🫣 If you’re working on your off-ice axel or refining your technique, hopefully some of this can help! Let me know if you have any questions and what you guys want to see more of! Thanks for watching as always!!
