i never considered myself a creative person. if anything, i rejected that side of myself despite dancing for two thirds of my life. at this late stage of capitalism, however, i’m starting to realise how powerful it is to continue to create. when the world seems to tell us to not engage in the arts for the sake of “productivity”, being an artist has always been and will always be a powerful form of resistance against that system.

yes, it took me economic theory and social discourse to recognize myself as an artist!! and this piece was my hardest project as one. being in a new team (love u @flux.uoft) where i struggled to feel like i belonged in, and choreographing a contemp piece for dancers who were mostly complete beginners to the genre was so much harder that i anticipated. although i always wanted to make this piece to @labrinth, my self doubt made me resent it. i thought about pulling out of the showcase on many occasions. if not for my pure love for dance, this piece would not have made it to the stage.

more importantly, these dancers’ (@alexandra.kochliu @chlo.etcc @eleanorhsu_ @ohheyitslia) patience and willingness to push themselves out of their comfort zones cannot go unnoticed. i am so grateful for each and every one of you, not only for executing difficult movements beautifully, but for simply having a good time on stage while dancing my creation, “k*ll 4 ur luv”. this piece is about the kind of love that you could not imagine life without, that you would kill for. this one’s also for my mom. i miss u (she’s alive lol) and love u in ways words can’t describe, so i made this dance instead.

super late but wanted to share this piece, 「私は」 [I am], i made last year. i think the most exciting thing in life is finding out more about myself. but it’s easy to identify your worth (as a student, a dancer, a younger sister, etc.) relative to other people. then who am i when ‘no one’s in the room’?
