I’ve been reflecting on these last two weekends and just how much they meant to me.

I got to take two trips and spend time with some of my favorite people — something that might seem simple from the outside, but for me, it represents so much more.

I live with Complex PTSD (cPTSD). It’s a disability that isn’t always visible, and there are parts of it I’ve spent a long time learning how to understand, manage, and talk about. Things that may feel routine to someone else — getting on a plane, traveling away from home, being outside of my comfort zone — can take an incredible amount of work when your nervous system has learned to constantly prepare for danger.

And yet, these last two weekends, I flew. I traveled. I showed up. I lived.

A huge part of why I’m able to do that today is because of the people I got to visit.

I was able to open up about my cPTSD, the things I struggle with, and parts of myself that can be difficult to explain. I was met with love, patience, understanding, and support — not judgment. You reminded me that I don’t have to hide the harder parts of myself to be loved.

Disabilities don’t always look the way people expect them to. Sometimes progress isn’t something anyone else would even notice. Sometimes progress is simply getting on the airplane when there was a time your body and mind told you that you couldn’t.

So to the friends I got to hug, laugh with, talk with, and make memories with these past two weekends: thank you. Your love and support have been part of the reason I’ve gotten to a place where trips like these are even possible.

I’m incredibly grateful for how far I’ve come, incredibly grateful for the people who have helped me get here, and proud that I’m learning to talk openly about a disability that has shaped so much of my life.

16 years ago, I gave River our last hug before our last day of high school ended.
Life took us in different directions, on our respective paths, and taught us such different lessons.

This weekend brought us back together, and what a time it was.

A reunion 16 years in the making.

Pardon the lack of direction in this video, I was v v stressy depressy 💅🏼

Upside? The newly puffy under eyes are courtesy of minor dermatitis, and skin that’s sensitive (just like me ✨).

Downside? Pathology takes 10 business days which is just rude. Gay. (It’s fine I’m allowed to say it it’s June.)

(Real talk 24 hours later, though, shoutout to my provider- it was my first time meeting her and she really listened to me. I’ve been wanting to get that gross old thing tested forever, and she said, “Got time now?”. Baller.)

Sunday supper looks luscious, and she ain’t even done yet.🥵💕

-A gorgeous Wagyu chuck roast, marbled, rich, and meaty 🐄
-A mountain of fresh veggies (potatoes, carrots, celery), transformed into stars in their own right 🥔 🥕
-A (generous) splash of Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, for depth and complexity 🍷
-A fat pat of Kerrygold butter, to give the jus some unctuous richness.
-Salt, pepper, and herbs for days, to highlight and elevate.

All of the above plus 8 hours of time spent happily awaiting her arrival.

(Why yes, if given the opportunity, I’d bathe in that jus.)
