Yes, it takes a little extra time to fill and label sample-sized skin care products*, but I make a point of offering them in an intentionally affordable format so folks can try various options before committing to full size products. Why? For the following reasons:

🌼 To help folks switching from petrochemicals to plant based products. For example, you might think you have dry skin only to discover your past products are responsible for the dehydration you’re trying to resolve. Rather than buying full-sized Just the Goods products for dry skin, the skin care product selection quiz I programmed for justthegoods.net recommends trying samples of products for normal/sensitive skin, and *maybe* some for dry skin (depending on your responses to questions), to see which actually work best for you. And, did you know that other factors impact which product will suit you best, including the mineral content of the water you use, and/or the other products you include (or don't) as part of your routine? As another example, it's noted in my skin care product selection quiz results that following face wash with correctly applied toner generally gives better results than face wash alone. All in all, it can be quite challenging to know which items are best for you/your needs without trying a few samples first. As such, sampling first ultimately helps to avoid disappointment.

🌼 To encourage slow discovery rather than fast impulse buying; relatedly, to avoid a high-pressure sales situation. Buy what you need, if you need it, or don't. Not buying things is okay, too 😊

🌼 To avoid unnecessary waste of product, of packaging, of money, of time ... both yours, and mine. And, it's better for the environment when we all make careful choices. What can I possibly do with returned products other than pour unused portions into a garbage can, and containers into a recycling bin? An unfortunate waste, all in all, especially after the carbon spent on return shipping! Better to try a sample than to end up with a full bottle of an inappropriate product 😊

I receive messages from marketers several times per week offering to help Just the Goods “target segments” to “maximize sales” by “increasing conversions” in order to “accelerate growth”. The senders usually claim to be skin care sales optimization specialists, and try to stir anxiety by warning me about what my “competitors” are doing. Sometimes they’re reps of apps I use to facilitate behind-the-scenes operations and admin, chiding me for "missing opportunities".

Here’s the thing… I’m not fixated on growth.

If I were, I’d:

🔹 outsource production to a private label manufacturer, add preservatives to increase product shelf life, and I’d work with a fulfilment warehouse to ship products the day they're ordered, instead of making fresh batches each week by hand

🔹 increase product prices to hide the cost of shipping so each client pays more than their fair share

🔹 increase product prices so much that it also conceals the price of return shipping, rather than invite folks to explore products slowly through samples, being mindful of what they actually need each day

🔹 increase product prices to cover the cost of buy now pay later services, restock alerts, new product push notifications, text message solicitation, and BOGO offers

🔹 increase product prices enough to hire content creators to build a social media presence defined by a unified colour palette featuring tons of pics and reel of me and other models. I know it’s what IG’s algorithm loves, and some people do it really well for great purposes (i.e. anti-racism and/or pro-decolonization education), but I’m happy embracing my introversion!

↪️ However, if you really, reaaaaaally want me to make a reel where I do a funny dance while pointing to words, I will do it if this post gets 1000 likes and 1000 comments *Jkjk* 🙃😂

Happy Pride Month! Happy National Indigenous History Month!

Yesterday I was fortunate to see a tree in full pink and white, perfectly framed against a momentary glimpse of blue sky. I’m probably going to sound like an unpracticed sentimental poet here, but that visual promise of summer in a lavender-esque palette felt like the land blooming into full colour pride.

That got me thinking about the land, and Indigenous ancestors all over the world who cherished those who might now be called Queer, Two-Spirit, Trans, Non-binary or Gender Non-Conforming.

One of the things I learned while studying ancestral plant medicine with Toi Scott is that many spiritual healing traditions envision those who combine characteristics of sexes and genders -- variations of Mother Earth and Father Sky -- as mediators and bridges, thus better connected with the spirit realm as messengers, visionaries, dream interpreters, keepers/teachers of spiritual principles, and as medicine people who could support births and burials, bless unions, and perform other ceremonies.

I’m a queer, non-binary femme of Indo-Caribbean and Mediterranean origin. I can only dream of being able to do the things my distant ancestors might have. This pride month, like all others, I want to remember, honour, and thank all our 2SLGBTQIAA+ ancestors throughout history, including recently.

Always remember: modern Pride as we know it started as a riot led by Black and Brown trans women against police violence. Pride is about liberation from colonialism, capitalism, and the state. Hard-fought human rights gains improve safety and freedom for all and must be protected, and expanded. The fight to live truthfully, authentically, and free from harm continues. No one is free until we are all free.

I absolutely love the scene WPRFM has created and I am beyond grateful to be welcome to join the festivities which include both live DJs aaaaand a low sensory shopping hour!!

As you know, I make over 150 different formulas, so I've been pretty choosy about what I'll bring to this event and have landed on things that aren't tooooo specialized and can be helpful for many people, while also offering a little sample from each of the categories I serve: facial care, body care, hair care, and personal care 😊 For example...

Thank you to everyone who kindly forwarded the amazing opportunity offered by @todmaffin for makers in Canada to share a 10 second video about products they can no longer ship to the United States due to tariffs 🌼 I appreciate you thinking of me/Just the Goods!

Aaaaand, I am now freshly reminded of why I *never* post videos ... It's 10000% beyond the scope of my ability 😂

I was trying to say: "Since 2009 I've offered skin, body, and haircare products at public wholesale prices because I believe cosmetics made from safe, natural ingredients should be affordable. My hair care and perfume can no longer ship to the United States - I hope more people will be able to enjoy them here in Canada" ...and, well, it didn't work 😭😂

I sent in what I could manage, but I don't know if it will be eligible 😂 How do people speak on camera with such ease? Take an opportunity to appreciate your local speaks-naturally-on-camera friend today! 😁

As you may already know, trade negotiations between Canada and the United States have been suspended. CUSMA -- the agreement by which I've been able to continue shipping to the United States, even after the repeal of de minimis -- is not scheduled to expire for another 10 years, but three Presidential Proclamations under Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930 have altered the list of products I can currently export into the US using USPS domestic mail without the application of tariffs:

In the event such products have already been purchased before they could ship ahead of these changes, I will issue product and/or order cancellations and refunds. I will do that later today after I've had some sleep. Any products accidentally purchased in the future while this proclamation stands (i.e. orders placed using a VPN that circumvent geo-tagging) will be cancelled and refunded. I thank you in advance for your understanding 💚

Please note this list of products may be subject to future changes -- I'll continue to share information with you as soon as it becomes available to me.

As an endorser of Breast Cancer Prevention Partners, it is my pleasure to help promote National Clean Beauty Day because it's an invitation for those with ties to the United States to urge their congressional representatives to co-sponsor and support the Safer Beauty Bill Package.

Many of you already know the US hasn't meaningfully updated its cosmetics safety laws in over 80 years. This lets irresponsible beauty and personal care companies sell products containing chemicals linked to cancer, hormone disruption, and developmental harm without being required to disclose the harmful realities of their ingredient choices. Canada does not currently have an NGO campaigning to improve the cosmetic formulation standards, and that's why paying attention to what is happening in the United States is so important: advancements there will benefit people elsewhere.

As BCPP makes clear, no matter where we live, work, or shop, we all deserve personal care and beauty products that are free from cancer-causing and other harmful chemicals. It's incredibly frustrating to know it's legal to make and sell products that include asbestos, lead, and mercury, as well other toxic chemicals linked to cancer, hormone disruption, infertility, learning disabilities, and other negative impacts on human health. And, when we're now seeing 1 in 8 people developing breast cancer in their lifetime, we know we can't afford to wait any longer to take action.

The objective of the Safer Beauty Bill Package is to close dangerous gaps in US federal law with a view to protecting everyone, especially people of colour and professional salon workers, who face the highest levels of unsafe exposures because of the cosmetic products marketed to them, or commonly found in their workplaces.

The EU already bans most of these chemicals. So do California, Washington, Oregon, and Vermont. It's time for a federal standard that protects everyone, everywhere.
