POSTS STORIES REELS

Finally doing an “About Me” post—getting a family pic is near impossible, so that’s why it took so long! Over the last 6 months, a few thousand people have joined my journey of writing biblically centered and practical theology. Thanks for being a part! It means the world to me, and I’m excited to share more about myself.

FAMILY
I have 5 kids, aged 10 to 10 months as of this post—3 boys and twin girls. My wife and I were college sweethearts, and I proposed to her the day after I graduated. Outside of Jesus, she is the best thing that’s ever happened to me. I love her and thank God for her regularly ❤️

CHURCH
I’ve pastored for over 10 years now in my hometown, NYC. In 2017, with a group of amazing people, I planted @zionnyc. It’s been one insane journey that I wouldn’t trade for anything. Our first location was in Brooklyn, NY, and we recently launched @zionstatenisland.

CAREER
My degree is in Business Finance, and I’m probably what would be classified as a serial entrepreneur (unfortunately). A few weeks after graduating (and proposing), I started @mattera_mgt, which has allowed me to work with some of the greatest churches and nonprofits in the country. In 2019, I started @blendbayridge, which became @cityleaguecoffee in 2023. We just opened our second location and ship amazing coffee all around the world! (Try it out 😉).

PASSION
My passion has always been reading, writing, and teaching. My dad is also a pastor and started training me in apologetics and theology from a young age. I love the Bible and learning everything I can about it. A while back, I realized that was my “one thing” in life to do. After years of reasons not to, I finally took the plunge and put my writing out there for the world (or at least a little corner of it) to see. I love to engage others in thought, debate, and life in Christ. My hope is to make theology and the Bible more accessible for everyone to understand and apply.

STORIES
On my stories, you’ll probably find the books I’m reading, the things I’m doing with the kids, and the church I love to pastor.

Writing is joy enough for me, but engaging with others while I do it is icing on the cake! Thank you again for being a part! by @just_mattera

As important as leadership is, it is not for everyone. Discipleship is the clear call Jesus gives that is for everyone and should be every Church’s goal.

A common saying deconstructed.

Good persons have to face trying times often, by God’s will. He allows tests to spring up from every point of the compass. Whether these are from human beings, from demons, or from a person’s own nature, let it provoke thanksgiving. God cannot pour out His favour on a person whose heart longs to dwell with Him, except by sending trials for truth’s sake. Even so, no-one can become worthy of this majesty apart from the grace of Christ.

Saint Paul clearly calls it a gift: “For to you it has been granted for Christ’s sake, not only to believe in Him, but also to suffer for His name” (Phil. 1:29). Saint Peter says the same: “But even if you suffer for righteousness’ sake, blessed are you” (1 Pet. 3:14). God grants you a share in Christ’s agonies. A daily cross: that is God’s way. No-one has ever gone to heaven through an easy life.

If you don’t disciple your kids, someone else will.

Thankful to @reformationheritagebooks and their commitment to family worship! Just picked up this gem and have been using it for our nightly worship. We love it!

Comment ‘link’ and I’ll DM you the book link.

In his fight against Arianism, to show the divinity of Christ, St. Athanasius gives us some of the most beautiful Christology.

When you begin to explore ancient heresies that the church had to combat, you’re going to realize that they sound a lot like heresies that you see today. Justo Gonzales gives another great church history book that is very accessible and easy to read exploring the topic.

Last week I got the chance to hang with some of my pastor friends in the city and my man @aaronjchung gave me the best gift - books! Appreciate him and the work he planted in the heart of the city @exilicchurch

Also shout out to @crosswaybooks for their dedication to beautiful books!

Check out these three amazing books. I’ve been wanting to get my hands on the hymnal for a while now!

How can we live a life pleasing to God? Pray for these four things.

Colossians 1:10 so that you may walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, to please Him in all respects, bearing fruit in every good work and multiplying in the full knowledge of God; 11 being strengthened with all power, according to His glorious might, for the attaining of all steadfastness and patience; joyously 12 giving thanks to the Father

Want to understand the reformation but don’t know where to start? Here’s a great list of historical overviews, biographies, and theological works from the time period that is a great place to start!

Had a blast teaching @zionnyc on church history these last few weeks! And shout out to @truth.unites for his life’s work on defending the need for the reformation.
