SOUND ON// September is one of my most favorite times of the year for this trail camera location.

Almost every year I get something new here and this time it was these two who I think might be or becoming a mating pair. However they might also be siblings catching up again.

The one closet is a male and the far one a female judging by the width of the bridge of the nose.

If they are a mating pair then I look forward to capturing some kittens here in the near future.

Seeing a newborn beluga whale, still with fetal folds, has to be up there with life's great pleasures.

In addition to overwhelming cuteness it is a sign that this population, here in the Churchill River Estuary, is doing well.

In other parts of the world, the St. Lawrence for example, belugas are struggling to raise healthy calves because of our industry.

Here in Churchill there is a baby-boom, where it's common to see dozens of beluga whales at all different life stages.

That provides dopamine hits to my brain that I want more of.

Still one of the wildest moments I've ever had in the ocean. This group of both adults and juveniles were together for a few hours on a random early start to the day for our team. Socializing and connecting with each other at times we were swept up in the group and they swam around us. All we could do is watch as they acknowledged us and then ignored us while they enjoyed their community and family ties.

We never know when events like this will happen, but we know that seeing wildlife on their terms be it up close or from afar changes our relationship with the planet we are on.

Here are a few of my favorite moments from our first week in Churchill, Canada. While conditions weren't always easy, complete with numb hands and questioned sanity as we looked at our pictures and wondered why so many are blurry (thanks to waves of haloclines), it was always fulfilling. What a special place!

One of the most incredible whale encounters that I've had involved these six humpback whales a few years ago. We didn't expect there to be this many when we jumped in but all of a sudden they all appeared. This show lasted for a good 10 minutes, just the whales doing their thing while we watched.

Looking forward to seeing more of these beauties soon.

A rare moment on a beautiful day filming southern right whales. This baby was feeding from mum in the shallow water of Península Valdés. Watch for the milk plume that drifts past mums tail when the baby comes to the surface. Getting a chance to witness these events is truly a life well spent.

Looking through the archives, each of these images unlocked something. A memory of the day, the people, the moments the wilderness gave us. To me the joy found in these images is tangled with the grittiness of being out on the water. Rough weather, cold, wind, doubt, boredom, fatigue. It’s the cake conundrum. Type 1 and type 2 fun playing out simultaneously where the physical persistence of the ocean and the ephemeral nature of wild animals collide. That’s what I’m chasing.

I'll hope you'll chase it too!
