I’m trying to find a balance between the algorithm and making art. In a constant loop of trying to be “seen” as a small business and artist it becomes exhausting.

I took almost two years off social media when I went on maternity leave, it was like a weight had been lifted off of me. After a while, I didn’t even think about it anymore. It definitely didn’t help my business by going dark. But wow, did it help my mind.

I am grateful to this platform for allowing me to preserve flowers for over a decade now. I’ve built my business from it, I’ve connected with so many wonderful clients, florists, farmers and local businesses because of it.

In all that said, I’m trying to get back to why I started JUST B SMILING in the first place — because I loved pressing flowers, not because of an algorithm.

I look forward to continuing to preserve your flowers for you & making art with them, that’s what’s most important to me 🌼🌸🥀

It’s been months since I’ve shared new work. The busy wedding season is coming to an end and I’ve been deep into the design process — my favourite part.

This beauty for Heather, captured so lovely in a floating frame. The depth of colours in this bouquet really made for a final piece that pops.

I love the style of this one. It really allows the flowers to stay whole, with most of their stems in tact, giving the illusion of a magical fairy garden.

So. much. to. look. at. It’s a flower puzzle for Ema.

The bouquet was made by @the_wildbunch & there were so many levels to it.

I always tell my couples the quality of your flowers is just as important as is the floral preservation process. When florals are fresh, in season and in amazing shape it makes such a difference for the pressing process.

Wedding bouquet preservation takes several months. There are many layers that go into the process. Once I’ve received your fresh wedding flowers, I immediately de-construct not only the entire bouquet, but most of the flowers too.

Why? Because colour retention! Mold! Often times when flowers are kept whole for pressing (especially white or light ones) they brown or mold. The flower as a whole contains too much moisture and leads to unhappy results.

The art of bouquet pressing is not for the faint of heart, it takes lots of hours, lots of love and meticulous movements. It can be tedious but so rewarding when you open your press to find perfectly pressed flowers. And even more, when they’re white! A mighty task.

Refined Style

I’ve been drawn back to this style a lot lately.
It’s somewhat abstract, designed with a select amount of flowers from your bouquet.
