ICYMI: broken windows policing is still happening in NYC, no matter what NYPD Commissioner Tisch claims. We saw it in practice last week, while observing arraignments in courts -- disproportionately targeting Black, Latine, Brown and low-income NYers. Out of more than 370 arraignments we saw in 4 days, 57% of them were for misdemeanor charges, and 93% targeted people of color.

“ What New Yorkers saw in courtrooms this week was not a new approach to public safety that Mayor Mamdani promised during his campaign,” JC Organizer Samy Feliz said. "It is not focusing on police resources on serious crime. It is the same aggressive, racially discriminatory enforcement of low-level offenses that we saw under Eric Adams.”

Mark your calendars: Justice State of Mind is back on Oct. 29! 🎉

This year’s celebration comes at a pivotal moment. Amidst escalating political and police violence and the ever-expanding threats to our communities, the need for JC’s work is growing—but funding for grassroots organizing continues to shrink. In spite of all of it, JC has always known: real change is powered by community, and that’s what Justice State of Mind is all about.

JSMVII: Ritmo y Revolution will be an evening of art, dancing, and political urgency, designed to bring our community closer while we step into what comes next ✊

Seven years ago today, #AllanFeliz was beaten, tased, threatened, shot and left to bleed out by NYPD Lt. Jonathan Rivera during an unjust traffic shop. Allan's family fought for Allan through years of intentional NYPD delays and obstructions, only for @NYPDPC to shamefully overturn her own deputy's guilty verdict and let Rivera keep his job & gun last year. The Feliz family is continuing the fight for Allan by sying Commissioner Tisch and demanding she #FireJonathanRivera.

Allan was a beloved son, father, brother, and friend. Today and everyday, we remember him and send love & strength to his family. #NeverForget by @justicecommittee

What we're reading!

The court-appointed monitor in the landmark stop-and-frisk case, Floyd v. City of New York, released a report showing that the NYPD is still severely underreporting stops. The lack of transparency, the monitor says, undermines “constitutional policing, accountability, and public trust.”

The police both fail to report stops and wrongly classify stop and frisks as lower-level encounters. The monitor estimates the police misreported over 10,000 stops in 2025 – an underreporting rate of about 28 percent. by @justicecommittee

This morning, @NYCMayor Mamdani released a slate of police reforms... which may be well-intentioned, but are woefully inadequate and will not address NYPD's culture of violence and impunity.

The Mayor's announcement followed last week’s news that the NYPD allowed Officer Salvatore Alongi to retire with a disability pension while awaiting trial for killing #WinRozario, as well as an enraging ICE shooting in the Bronx. But it does nothing to stop NYPD’s ongoing brutality and impunity, nor to address Win's family's demands.

We wouldn’t be able to celebrate JC’s legacy and accomplishments without acknowledging the amazing work and impact of #IrisBaez. We’re humbled to honor her in memoriam at Justice State of Mind this year, and we hope you will join us on Oct 29 at BRIC to do just that!

Iris was a visionary organizer and tireless advocate who dedicated over three decades to supporting and building power with families who lost loved ones to police violence and fighting for safer communities. When her son #AnthonyBaez was murdered in 1994 by NYPD Officer Francis Livoti, Iris transformed unimaginable grief into relentless action.

As a longtime leader of Justice Committee, Iris was instrumental in achieving major campaign wins, like establishing a Special Prosecutor, repealing 50-A, and winning the Community Safety and Right to Know Acts.

Iris transitioned on September 10, 2026, but until that point, she never stopped fighting, and she never stopped caring. Her tenacity, kindness, and resolve lives on in JC and continues to drive the work forward.

Join us in honoring Iris by securing your tix or donating today! givebutter.com/jsmvii (link in bio)

The audacity of @NYPDPC Tisch blaming “human error” after *SHE* approved killer cop Alongi’s retirement while awaiting trial for killing #WinRozario 😡

The family of #WinRozario revealed yesterday that NYPD allowed Salvatore Alongi to retire with an increased pension and skip out on his disciple trial for killing the teen – but instead of acknowledging her own role in the corruption (Tisch is the CHAIR of the pension board) or giving real information about the circumstances of Alongi’s retirement, Commissioner Tisch deflected and blamed a single civilian employee for failing to notify CCRB.

Disgusting.

In response, Win’s family and Justice Committee are demanding:
🔎A full, independent investigation into Alongi’s retirement
📢For the CCRB to schedule the discipline trial for Officer Matthew Cianfrocco, the second officer charged with Win’s death
❌For @NYPDPC & @NYCMayor to FIRE Cianfrocco

🚨BREAKING: NYPD outrageously let killer cop Salvatore Alongi retire and avoid being tried for killing #WinRozario 😡

Today, the family of Win Rozario exposed that the NYPD let former NYPD Officer Salvatore Alongi, one of the two officers who killed their son, retire in May with his pension, while keeping them and the CCRB in the dark.

19-year-old #WinRozario was gunned down by NYPD Officers Salvatore Alongi & Matthew Cianfrocco in front of his mom and younger brother nearly 3 years ago. In Sept 2025, the CCRB substantiated multiple fireable charges against both cops, clearing the way for a disciplinary trial. Now, Alongi has escaped discipline consequences through his retirement, while Cianfrocco remains on the force and his discipline trial has yet to be scheduled.

In the words of Win’s family: ““All three of us have spoken about how outrageous it is that the NYPD let Alongi retire and avoid being fired for murdering Win. We want to make clear that we believe this is part of a major cover-up and corruption involving the top leaders of the NYPD, including Jessica Tisch, who should be fired. We feel betrayed by the mayor, who came to our home and talked with us when he was campaigning, after Win was murdered. He said he would be a different kind of mayor but it doesn’t seem like it when it comes to the NYPD.”

📢 AMPLIFY THE FAMILY’S DEMANDS:
1️⃣ Schedule the trial for Officer Cianfrocco and fire him, NOW!
2️⃣ Make sure Alongi is officially put on the state decertification list so he can’t work as an officer ever again.
3️⃣ Make all info about Alongi’s retirement public, thru a DOI investigation or another independent process.
4️⃣ Make sure NYPD higher ups face serious consequences for this – including firing Commissioner Jessica Tisch.
5️⃣ Remove police from all mental health response. by @justicecommittee
