Hiking through the Kiso Valley from Magome to Tsumago on the 400 year old Nakasendo trail.

This trail was used to commute between Kyoto and Tokyo by feudal lords, samurai armies, and often royal brides and princesses traveling from the imperial court in Kyoto to marry the shogun in Tokyo.

Parts of it are still made of the original river rocks they hand laid centuries ago to stop the steep mountain paths from washing away in the heavy rains.

The coolest little Edo period town in the Japanese Alps. In the 1600-1800s, these towns acted as rest stops for samurai and merchants traveling between Kyoto and Tokyo along the Nakasendo trail.

We took a train out of Tokyo, rented a car, and headed up into the mountains.

When we arrived in the evening, it was rainy, foggy, and completely deserted.

Walking up and down the narrow cobblestone streets with the water rushing down the stone canals was one of my favorite parts of our trip.
