I'm not much for holidays. I tend to gravitate toward small, meaningful moments with my chosen people. As with most holidays, I'll be working today for time-and-a-half.It's difficult to celebrate a country under such an oppressive regime. Some say the gargoyle in the White House didn't create what's happening so much as lift the rock that exposed the ugliest parts of our history and how we've treated people.So today, my focus is on celebrating the people of this country. The people who were already here. The people whose voices have been silenced, however they came here.I've been told all my life that we're lucky to have been born into the greatest country in the world. Any greatness here is largely because of the people who've been marginalized while still doing the work of building it. That's why this administration keeps trying to erase that history, like a bully taking credit for someone else's homework.To those who still support this shameful leadership despite the facts, the cruelty, and the corruption, there is no doubt. We are not divided by politics alone. We're divided by kindness, honesty, and integrity. I cannot pretend otherwise.If you're looking for something to celebrate today, as I am, celebrate the people who truly are the backbone of this country - Native, Latine, Black, Asian, LGBTQ Americans, veterans, immigrants, and every hard-working, good-hearted person who helps make this country better than its leaders. by @jvcarroll4

It's been 35 years since I came out in my hometown of Houston, Texas. I was a teenager and didn't know a gay soul, but I just couldn't continue as I had been. My family is deeply evangelical and it was not easy. It still isn't, but there's love. There are also boundaries and, unfortunately, that's the only way it works. Coming out wouldn't have even been possible without the brave people who came before me, many of them still very much fighting for us - and a lot of them are trans. I'm grateful to all of them. I also have several families now and lots of gratitude for that too. #happypride 🏳️‍🌈✨️ by @jvcarroll4
