October 7, 2023 was a horrible and traumatic day for us. Our tradition teaches b'tzelem elohim: every human is made in the image of the divine.

It does not diminish the sincerity of our grief that we recognize both the context for and the response to the horrors of that day. Some apparently feel that acknowledging the reality of context and response is an attempt to dismiss or lessen recognition of real trauma. We vehemently disagree.

This is huge, because it shows progress toward the goal of holding Israel accountable and withholding aid and arms.

Forty-seven U.S. Senators voted to have the State Department issue within 30 days of passage an unclassified statement regarding Israel’s human rights practices. The point of this is the existence of several U.S. laws that prohibit foreign assistance and arms sales to any country with gross human rights abuses (including killing civilians).
So onward! Change in the political realm is tragically slow, and "justice delayed is justice denied," but here's to staying true to the goal of a freedom and dignity from the river to the sea...

An explanation for why we love pomegranate so much this time of year: We imagine a pomegranate has 613 seeds, like the 613 mitzvot of the Torah compiled by Maimonides.

It's not possible for each one of us to carry out all 613 commandments/deeds/obligations, but in community/affinity/coalition with one another we can cover a lot of ground. See you in 5787. by @jvptacoma

In these Days of Awe, we move from imagining the day the world was born on Rosh Hashanah to rehearsing our death on Yom Kippur. We review our actions and inactions in the year that is now gone. We ask to be sealed in the Book of Life.

Rashi commented: Because these are days of judgment and our lives hang in the balance, we pray to Hashem to remember us for life.

All our lives hang in the balance, because we are all kin. We are pleading to divest from death. Our wisdom tradition offers us a ritual technology to turn our grief into action: To face our complicity in imperialism, capitalism, colonization and genocide in Palestine, and on Turtle Island. To sing, to cast off our broken vows into the sea, and recommit to life. זָכְרֵֽנוּ לְחַיִּים Remember us for life. Fight for life.

This season we pray as a "we," atoning in community. We did not drop the bomb, but we spent the dollar. We did not destroy the home/the family/the olive tree, but we bit our tongue instead of keeping Palestine on our lips. We did not kill, but we did not stop the killing. We are all responsible for the devastation of Gaza as long as it continues.

When we renew our commitment to life, we restore our endurance. What is my strength, and how can I add it to the strengths of others?
