Good luck to those racing Ironman Arizona this weekend!

I didn't appreciate it so much at the time, but this was one of my better pro races in 2010 and was immortalized in this sweet 23-minute film, "Wongstar: The Documentary." However, by the time @felixcervantes had edited and pushed it out mid-2011, I was already burnt out and would retire from the pro ranks several months later. 😢

It was my sophomore season and a bit tumultuous, as I had traveled all over the USA racing almost every American IM race after an early season training camp in Thailand. My rookie season was an outstanding success full of ridiculous improvements--I came into 2009 with a 12:08 Ironman PR and by November of that year had lowered it to 9:54.

Fast forward 12 months, and by November of 2010, Ironman Arizona was my 8th and final Ironman--of 2010. It also ended up being the fastest of 2010, and I was so happy that my mom and high school assistant track coach got to see me race at that level. And so grateful for my friend Felix to capture it on video!

In 2009 I basically lived overseas at training camps 80% of the time, and felt this greatly contributed to my success. In 2010 I struggled to reach that same level, moving around and training mostly on my own. I was very lonely and very broke. At IM Arizona, I swam a 1:06, biked 5:16, and ran a 3:34, finishing 12th in a stacked pro field full of Ironman champions. World champ Chrissie Wellington was the only one who lapped me on the run 😂 and broke the Ironman distance world record that day. I was only 10mins off my best time and proved to myself that I could be 7 months out from my last training camp and train on my own to still go pretty fast.

Also...8 Ironmans in one year?! I'm so proud of how I did that, and to have my best one be that 8th one, and am even prouder now that I am so far removed from that kind of life and fitness level. 😆 by @jwneill302

Last week we turned our show into a “group ride” by welcoming Jocelyn Wong Neill to the podcast. Jocelyn is a co-host on the If We Were Riding Podcast from @feistytriathlon Talking to Jocelyn it’s clear that she loves to chase big goals - which shouldn’t have been a surprise knowing she got herself on to Team TBB back in 2008 training under notorious triathlon coach Brett Sutton. Even after all her years in the sport and having her almost 3-year-old daughter, she is still finding new motivation in the sport. Next year she is aiming to qualify for the first ever women’s World Championship Ironman in Nice, France.

On the show we talk about her early triathlon days, her transition back to age-group racing after being a full time pro, and her experience training as a mom. Jocelyn shares her birth story and experience with a c-section and struggles with postpartum training injuries. She and Amy also nerd out about triathlon podcasts.

2026 @usatriathlon Nationals, Day 1: Draft-Legal Sprint Triathlon.

I was so excited about this race! I've never raced a draft legal tri but raced road bikes in college and can throw down some big power with way above average bike handling skills for a triathlete (hahaha).

Really leisurely 12:10pm start and I got to meet legendary Kona and world triathlon champ @karensmyers8926 in transition. Caught up with my fave race announcer and hype woman @michandashines who insisted I tell Karen I was the first Asian-American female pro triathlete 😆

I had a strong swim for me (thank you last minute swim panic training in July), quick transition, jumped on my bike and...went nowhere fast. In my mind I would be able to jump in a pack, bridge up to the next and keep moving up. In reality, I felt shockingly slow and went backwards. I couldn't hold 18-20mph while drafting, would get dropped and barely hold 15-16mph alone...while dropping 200 to 400+ watts. I kept pushing despite getting dropped down the field with one of the slowest bike splits in my AG.

**Is it because I only put my road bike together a week ago and haven't raced on it in 20 years?? I should've gotten a bike fit. The geometry is just too different! Do I even want to race on Sunday? Is it because I got stung by a bee the Sunday before?! WTF is wrong with me?!**

Once on the run, I had no choice but to pick people off and move up the field. Passed a lot of ladies and did not get passed!

I saw my friend, rival, and the next day's mixed relay teammate @vkandersdc towards the end of the longest 5km ever and had the juice to outsprint her in the homestretch as Ainsley screamed with Aunt Kathy @turbo6chick and waved her GO MOM! sign. 🥹

I ended up 7th in W45-49 in a small field (top 3 was a podium) and was severely disappointed...although still happy and grateful that "at least we got to race," unlike last year.

After gaslighting myself for hours after the race, I said "you know, the only saving grace is if the rear brake is rubbing"...I checked my rear wheel in the hotel room and...it barely moved. 🤦🏻‍♀️ So Day 1 of racing ended in a mix of frustration AND relief. I had 2 more races to redeem myself! taken in Milwaukee, Wisconsin by @jwneill302

2026 @usatriathlon Nationals, Day 0: Travel and check-in day!
❤️ Got in trouble for "climbing" on the LOVE sign.
🥟 Learned that you can't take squishy dumplings through TSA (gotta check in those glitter bombs!)
🚐 Ainsley discovers her love of minivans and strawberry Frappuccinos 🍓
🤳 Caught up with friends and teammates like @vkandersdc and "King Bob" who is 84 years old and always races at the national and world champs!
🚲 Reassembled my bike in 12 minutes, should've taken more time (foreshadowing). taken in Milwaukee, Wisconsin by @jwneill302

3 races, 3 days, 3 outfits + 1 podium outfit!

Last year I put all my eggs into the sprint triathlon basket at @usatriathlon Nationals only for it to get cancelled on race morning due to catastrophic flooding. 😭😭😭

This year I dusted off my 26yo college road racing bike since they added the draft legal sprint (Friday), mixed team relay (Saturday--each team member did a 225m swim, 4.3km bike and 800m run), and then threw on clip-on aerobars for the non-draft sprint (Sunday). I figured they couldn't cancel all 3 days...right??

I'm so proud of our team winning 🥈 in the country for our combined age group 191-220! That was the highlight of a crazy spectacular weekend catching up with so many triathlon friends.

I also got 7th in draft legal (with bad brake rub I didn't know about) and 12th in non-draft (just 10 seconds off the podium with a road bike!).

Thanks @vkandersdc, Joe and @christianwaterstraat for my first Nationals podium! 🥹 by @jwneill302
