Interested in learning more about Jackson Rising?
What is it? Who is it for? What parts of the city does it impact? How does the work move from ideas to implementation?

Josh McManus, an urban strategist with M|B|P / Make Big Plans and a member of the team that helped develop the Jackson Rising Framework Plan, discusses these questions on The Empower Podcast with @empower_ms.

In the episode, Josh talks about the importance of community collaboration, public-private partnerships, quality of life, and the belief that all citizens deserve access to economic mobility and a better future.

The initiative helped develop the Jackson Rising Framework Plan: A Civic Method for Leaders, Investment, and Action in Jackson, Mississippi. The plan captured priority ideas across 14 focus areas, including retaining and growing population in a shrinking city, improving public safety, fixing infrastructure, eliminating blight, growing the economy, strengthening public spaces, and advancing other shared priorities for the city’s future.

One of Jackson’s greatest challenges is population loss. A shrinking city impacts nearly every aspect of its health, from economic growth and infrastructure to public services and quality of life.

Jackson is also home to individuals and organizations deeply invested in its future. From longtime rooted residents and families choosing to return, to new businesses and public initiatives, there is a growing wave of energy and investment.

Through more than 30 stakeholder workshops, residents, leaders, and partners came together in 2025 to develop practical, investable ideas across 14 focus areas, including economic development, public safety, infrastructure, housing, and neighborhood vitality.

In the year ahead, Jackson Rising will continue sharing the ideas generated through this process to foster collaboration, attract investment, and create a shared direction for public and private partners working toward common goals. Over the past 90 days, Jackson Rising has brought together nonprofit leaders, government officials, business owners, and philanthropic partners to align investment around shared priorities for Jackson’s future.

Through more than 30 working group sessions, 300+ participants contributed over 400 ideas focused on retaining and growing Jackson’s population, strengthening neighborhoods, improving quality of life, and coordinating public and private investment.

This open house marked the release of a preview framework highlighting a selection of investable ideas. The full set of ideas and documentation from the process will be released in the new year as we move into 2026 with clarity and momentum.

Thank you to everyone who contributed time, insight, and leadership to the Jackson Rising process. This work reflects a collective commitment to move beyond discussion and toward coordinated action for Jackson’s future. Learn more at jxnrising.com taken in Jackson, Mississippi by @jxnrising

Today’s Jackson Rising workshop on economic growth made it clear that Jackson has everything it needs to grow: potential, ideas, and a willingness to work together. We started in the Jackson Rising Studio and expanded into The Heritage Building, activating two vacant downtown storefronts with new innovative ideas.

Thank you Jeff Good and Robert Gibbs for helping get this group together and guiding the conversation. We focused on key opportunities ahead: more multi-family housing for workforce and students, better support systems for entrepreneurs, activating Downtown, strengthening workforce readiness, expanding the Museum Trail, and creating a tech and innovation hub.

The room was packed with developers, business owners, architects, innovators, and community leaders, proving that collaboration is one of Jackson’s strongest tools. #JacksonRising taken in Jackson, Mississippi by @jxnrising

The studio was buzzing this week! Artists, musicians, art directors, and cultural leaders from across the city came together for the Jackson Rising Arts & Culture workshop.

Some of the emerging ideas include:
• Shared infrastructure for collaboration
• Designated Arts & Entertainment District
• Re-established City Arts Council
• Physical storefront for creative resources

These sessions are small group focused so we can move quickly, gather meaningful insight, and shape an actionable plan before the end of the year.

Jackson Rising is a citywide initiative and we want more ideas that reflect the full creative community. Want to add your perspective? Please reach us at ⬇️ contact@jxnrising.com taken in Jackson, Mississippi by @jxnrising

The real flex? A supportive community.

The reviews are in, and it’s clear the National Folk Festival brought joy, excitement, and real impact to downtown Jackson. Locals and visitors experienced a downtown that felt vibrant, safe, walkable, and full of energy.

WLBT’s pre-festival estimate projected $2.2M in economic impact, and with the turnout we saw, the final numbers are expected to be even higher. Local favorites like Ray’s To-Go Barbecue, Offbeat, and The Donut Shop Café reported major crowds, including 30,000 customers at the Donut Shop alone.

Events like @nffjackson breathe new life into our capital city and help us reimagine what community celebration can look like. Jackson is rising!

Jackson Rising is a citywide initiative calling on public and private partners to come together and form a collective action plan for Jackson.

By aligning resources and tackling challenges like blight, infrastructure, and safety, the initiative focuses on creating a high quality of life for all residents.

Recently, the Eliminate Blight Workshop brought together neighborhood associations, city officials, realtors, business owners, and policymakers to discuss action steps towards addressing blight across the city.

Key initiatives discussed include creating a dynamic real-time blight inventory, mapping and streamlining the blight-to-reuse process, and developing a procurement platform to connect qualified partners with cleanup and redevelopment projects.

Together, these efforts aim to restore pride, safety, and opportunity in neighborhoods across Jackson. #JacksonRising taken in Jackson, Mississippi by @jxnrising

This week, leaders from across city, county, and state agencies came together for the Jackson Rising Public Safety Workshop to explore collaborative solutions for a safer Jackson.

The discussion focused on building a unified approach to public safety through innovation, coordination, and community partnership. Key ideas included a research hub for testing new safety technologies, exploring joint command centers, launching neighborhood-led micro grant projects, and improving data sharing across departments.

On First Responders Appreciation Day, we recognize the dedication and courage of those who serve on the front lines every day, keeping our city safe and resilient. We appreciate the continued collaboration between departments that makes this progress possible! #JacksonRising taken in Jackson, Mississippi by @jxnrising

In Jackson, Mississippi, we’re planning for the future. During the State of the City Address, Mayor John Horhn highlighted the importance of strategic partnerships and bringing everyone to the table.

Based on the recent market value analysis, the city can now form a foundation for the Jackson Rising Citywide Comprehensive Plan that aligns our collective development, infrastructure, and economic goals.

Jackson’s story is still being written. The work ahead will not be easy, but we are rising. Rising to plan boldly, build wisely, and dream collectively. Rising to make Jackson not only the capital of this state, but a capital of opportunity. #JacksonRising taken in Jackson, Mississippi by @jxnrising

Today, I had the honor of delivering my first State of the City Address at the Mississippi Museum of Art as a message of belief, resilience, and renewal for our capital city.

Over the past 100 days, we’ve rolled up our sleeves and begun rebuilding trust, restoring optimism, and delivering on our promises. From major infrastructure investments and housing reform to workforce training and partnerships across city, county, and state lines, progress is happening.

We’re tackling blight, reimagining public spaces, and working to make Jackson safer, cleaner, and more connected. Together with our partners, we’re bringing new energy to neighborhoods, preparing for inspiring events like the National Folk Festival, and reigniting hope in every corner of our city.

Jackson’s best days aren’t behind us, they’re ahead of us. The work continues, and our story is still being written. Our time is now. Jackson is rising!
