Pre-Diwali parties have already started, and I am absolutely loving it ✨️

A super pretty Diwali bash hosted by our dear @chelnaa.creations. She welcomed us with so much love and care. Had a fantastic time enjoying the games, delicious food and of course...the company of lovely friends.

The theme was “Sparkle & Strappy”, which was completely out of my comfort zone. But you know me, I am always enthusiastic about participating in themes and experimenting with my looks. And one thing I strongly believe in is not buying something just for one occasion, especially when I know I won't repeat wearing it.

So, I decided to dig into my wardrobe and pulled out this beautiful baby pink chiffon saree. It's delicate, flowy and has lovely patchwork detailing. Paired it with a fuchsia pink corset to add that little extra drama.

Completed the look with long earrings and a necklace featuring my initial in Hindi.

A little sparkle, a little experiment and lots of fun. That's how I like my festive celebrations. 🩷

Unfortunately, there isn't much historical documentation available on the Baluchari weave. However, this is what researchers have shared across various platforms about its evolution.

Initially, Baluchari sarees featured nature-inspired motifs such as flowers, peacocks, swans and paisleys. What we commonly call paisley today was originally known as Kalka (believed to be associated with the Padchin of the Goddess). The name paisley came later through British influence.

During the Nawabi era, weavers began incorporating human figures and courtly scenes into their designs. The introduction of the Jacquard technique also played an important role in this evolution. It made it easier to weave intricate human figures and elaborate narratives on sarees.
Motifs such as emperors, empresses, chariots, hookahs and men holding weapons began appearing in the designs.

Then came the British era, bringing motifs such as trains, British officers of the East India Company riding horses and elephants, and other scenes reflecting the changing times.

As traditions continued to evolve and influences changed, mythological stories and figures also found their way into Baluchari designs, including scenes from the Ramayana, Mahabharata and Krishna Leela.

Another interesting aspect is that Baluchari is a Bengal weave, yet its drape and elaborate pallu don't necessarily seem to have been designed with the conventional Bengali drape in mind. Some researchers believe it may have been used as an exquisite wrapping cloth for special objects or presented as a gift to someone important. This is one possible explanation for its elaborate pallu.

The weave is often claimed to be 2,500 years old, but unfortunately, there isn't sufficient relevant historical documentation to establish this claim conclusively.

One more important clarification: there is no traditional cotton Baluchari weave as such. Cotton sarees featuring human figures that are often labelled as cotton Baluchari are generally associated with the Tangail weaving tradition.

A few of us got together at @shefali.verma.372 Di’s beautiful home, and what a lovely afternoon it was.

Shefali di is an artist, and her creativity reflects in every nook and corner of her home. Every space is thoughtfully planned and beautifully adorned with her own paintings and artistic touches. Honestly, every time I step into her home, it feels like walking into a museum. There is something beautiful to discover in every corner.

And, of course, she never fails to pamper us with her delicious and elaborate food spread. Everything was absolutely yummy.

The theme for the get-together was Baluchari and Bengal weaves, so we all dressed up in our beautiful Balucharis and other traditional Bengal weaves.

And I must say, the beautiful corners and artistic backdrops of her home made our pictures look even more gorgeous.

A lovely afternoon filled with beautiful sarees, delicious food, art and wonderful company. ❤️

Will write about my saree in the next post.

प्यार, विश्वास और साथ के इस पर्व पर आप सभी को करवा चौथ की शुभकामनाएँ| ❤️✨

What a gloomy day we had here in Delhi on Karwa Chauth. The sudden change in weather made the fast even more challenging after such a long time. And we all know Delhi mein mausam badalta hai toh kya hota hai.... 😅
But thankfully, I survived… Bhagwan ne sun li 🙏

Coming to my drape, I picked up this simple Maheshwari saree from Maharashtra Sadan. The moment I saw it, I fell in love with the colour and knew I wanted to wear it on Karwachauth. Most of the time, we plan our heaviest drapes for the occasion, but this time, the pretty colour and that beautiful contrasting green blouse won my heart.

If you look closely, the saree has three different shades of zari — silver, yellow and gold. The motifs on the borders are so neatly woven, adding just the right amount of detail to this simple yet beautiful saree.

Paired it with a Bengali necklace set and a stack of stone bangles. And of course, the mehendi. This time... I wanted a neat, designer look and thankfully I found the best mehendi wala. As you all know, finding a good professional who understands exactly what you want is no less than a task.

P.S. — Husband is missing from the photoshoot this time because he’s out of India. So, Karwa Chauth pictures are a solo affair this year.

Kalakshetra Saree: Where Handloom Meets the Grace of Bharatanatyam.

Did you know that the Kalakshetra saree tradition is closely associated with the revival of Indian classical dance costumes and traditional weaving?

The story takes us to Kalakshetra Foundation in Adyar, Chennai, founded by the legendary Rukmini Devi Arundale, a Bharatanatyam dancer who envisioned a space where Indian art, culture and craftsmanship could flourish.

The story behind the weave :

The Origin : The Kalakshetra tradition emerged in the late 1930s, with sarees and textiles designed to complement the grace and authenticity of Bharatanatyam costumes.

• A revival of tradition: The initiative encouraged the preservation of indigenous weaving skills, traditional motifs and the use of natural dyes.

• Distinctive design: Inspired by the Kanjeevaram tradition, these sarees are admired for their contrasting borders, earthy colours, temple-inspired patterns and motifs drawn from nature.

• The beauty of korvai: This traditional weaving technique creates striking contrasts between the body of the saree and its borders, reflecting the skill and precision of the weaver.

• Beyond Chennai: The Kalakshetra design vocabulary has also inspired regional interpretations, including sarees popularly marketed as Bishnupuri Kalakshetra sarees.

What makes these sarees special is not just their aesthetic appeal, but the connection between dance, cultural heritage and the handloom tradition.

As a handloom lover, I believe every saree has a story worth discovering. The more we learn about our weaves, the more meaning we find in the six yards we drape.

Color of the day is Green. 💚
We worship Maa Katyayani. She represents righteous anger against adharma (unrighteousness), internal strength, and the destruction of the human ego.

Did you know that the nine forms of Maa Durga are associated with the chakras of the human body?

Maa Skandamata is associated with the Vishuddha Chakra, or the throat chakra, which is connected with truth, clear communication, self-expression, and releasing suppressed emotions or inner conflicts.

Here’s a simple ritual you can try today if there are emotions you want to let go of. Take a piece of paper and write down the feelings you want to release or situations that you have no control over. Read it n then burn the paper at night, safely, while imagining those emotions and burdens leaving you. No negative words, no blame, just a feeling of release and acceptance. Sometimes, letting go is all we need.

And coincidentally, today is Thursday, the day we usually associate with the colour yellow 💛

About my saree: This beautiful silk-cotton saree comes from Chhattisgarh, with the Chhattisgarh state song woven into it. It is woven by four-time National Award winner Sh. Nilambar Dewangan ji. Chhattisgarh's kosa silk, also known as tussar, is a must-explore for every saree enthusiast.
I paired it with a cotton ikat blouse and stack of wooden bangles.

Wore this saree for my visit to Sarees of India at Aga Khan Hall, where saree lovers faced quite a stampede-like situation today. The exhibition is on till 17th October, so do visit if you get a chance.

A day of colours, culture, handloom, and a little reminder to release what no longer serves us. 🪷

The colour of the day is BLUE 💙
Today, we worship Devi Kushmanda, whose name beautifully represents the creation of the cosmic egg and the energy that brings warmth and life to the universe.
• Ku – Little
• Ushma – Warmth or energy
• Anda – Cosmic egg
Her name signifies the creator of the cosmic egg, bringing warmth and life to the dark void.

How beautiful is this saree community, where we come together to celebrate our culture by dressing in the colours associated with Devi. We may have heard the names of many forms of the Goddess, but when we read each other's posts and learn about their significance, we understand the deeper meaning behind every name and its story.

Whether you post a picture every year or simply enjoy the virtual celebration, you still feel connected to it. And sometimes, the colour of the day reminds you of that special saree tucked away in your wardrobe, waiting to be worn again.

Just like this saree, which I had worn twice but somehow never posted on Instagram. Either the situation wasn't right, or it simply slipped my mind.

Today, Geeta Athreya ji, whom I fondly call Cool Amma, invited me for Golu pujan. When Amma asked us to wear blue sarees, this one immediately came to mind.

I'm wearing a zero zari Kanjivaram with it's own blouse. The geometric patterns caught my eye, as they always do, and I absolutely love the Ganga-Jamuna borders on this saree. Styled with oxidised jewellery and a crochet gajra to complete the look.

P. S - Full marks to Mr. Husband for capturing the colours of my eyeshadow so beautifully. 😄
