What’s the best thing about a girls’ trip?

Yes, the glam shots, the dressing up, the long breakfasts, the need to soak in the Mediterranean sun every chance we get, the giggles, the gossip, the conversations, the random professions of love, and the impromptu hugs are all amazing. But what I’m really going to miss is the active listening, the empathy, the pep talks, and the ego boosters—the ease with which we started as strangers and ended as sisters.

I’ll miss the absolute confidence we bring into every room we enter, the deep sense of belonging, and the unspoken “I get you” that comes from being around women with similar lived experiences. And, of course, I’m absolutely going to miss all the colloquialisms..

Here’s to many such trips in the future. Inshallah. by @jyothiajithkumar

Modelling our way through Essaouira today.. We got lucky when a lovely man from our hotel became our personal videographer.

Essaouira is a beautiful coastal town with stunning Portuguese architecture and colours. It’s also famous for being the city of Astapor in Game of Thrones. By the end of the morning, we absolutely felt like Khaleesis. taken in Essaouira, Morocco by @jyothiajithkumar

Morocco Day 2, part 2: Casablanca to Chefchaouen. We stopped to buy fresh carrots to munch on, but also got to taste some delicious fresh fennel. The roads were phenomenal, flanked by fields and wild flowers - not how we’d imagined Morocco to be. This would soon become a theme as the country surprises us every day with sights and experiences that we didn’t expect.

We stopped at the Rif hotel for lunch and tasted our first (of many) tagines and flan, which were delicious. We finally got to Chefchaouen just before sunset which gave us an hour to explore the blue city during golden hour.

Let’s be real, I came for the food and how Morocco gave! I haven’t had a single bad meal so far. The walk around the #fezmedina was an absolute sensory overload but also one of my favoritest days so far. At every turn there was something that we had to stop for. On a lighter note, there couldn’t be a more apt song right now. by @jyothiajithkumar

More from our walk through the Fes Medina. What an absolutely fantastic experience. After lunch, our guide Lahcen took us to the old (now inactive) madrassa where we spoke about religion, culture and the progressive politics of Morocco. We’re all amazed at how incredibly progressive the monarch and government of Morocco are, more so than several “western” countries.

We then went into a Foundouk Caravan Serai, which is a hotel for traders. Amazed to know the animals (horses/mules/donkeys) would be tethered in the courtyard so the travellers could rest.

From there we saw the mausoleum of Moulay Idris II, one of the main founders of Fez, and is believed to be a direct descendant of Prophet Muhammad.

We then witnessed how metal crafts are hand-made before we went to a spice souk where we learned a lot about local spices, argan oil, prickly pear oil, and traditional medicines.

Our second-last stop was to the local weaving souk where we learned how they weave cotton and Aloe Vera threads(!!) to create beautiful fabric. The last stop for the tour was at the famous Fes tannery. No amount of orange perfume and fresh mint leaves could keep the smell at bay, but it was an informative session to learn about the leather industry.

Inspite of the barrage of questions, our lovely guide was incredibly patient and informative. Can’t stress enough how utterly uninformed I’ve been about Morocco.

A trip to the Fes Medina, the walled city within a city. An absolutely immersive experience, particularly during Ramadan. Houses in the Medina don’t have any windows and offer no way to distinguish the house of a rich person (Riad) from that of poorer individual (daar), from the outside. Instead, both types of properties have a central courtyard that has an open roof.

Medinas have 4 essential features - a public fountain, a public oven/bakery, a mosque and a hammam.

Medinas created a brilliant space for people to live in safely, offering all the essentials within it. The Medina at Fes has a 14km long wall surrounding it, markets, fountains, mosques and also protects its residents from the extreme heat of summer.

Memories of Paris 🗼🇫🇷 A lot of this trip was spent herding the kids between throngs of tourists and trying to explain to a 4 year old why it was a good idea to to climb up the Eiffel tower instead of waiting for the elevator 🥴, but my favorite memory is having a solo lunch at this gorgeous cafe inside Musée D'Orsay, with a view of Montmartre from the giant clock window🕰️ taken in Café Campana by @jyothiajithkumar
