Laterite Moorings:
Nuts, and Glory (1)

Among the many stories lingered in the humid monsoon air of Blathur, my village, tucked into the folds of Western Ghats in North Kerala, were the tales of cashew smugglers who would slide past state lines and check posts through the dark dense forest trails to reach the hill hamlet of Makuta, in the Kodagu (Coorg) region.

Cashew trees thrive on the laterite rich hills of western coast, often churned, carved and flattened by mining, and quarrying. Soon after the introduction by the Portuguese colonialists as means of soil stabilization in the region, the cultivation of the crop took over previously uncultivable residual terrains.
Plantations soon followed the plants, stirring the native lives and cultures for centuries to come.

Exercises in Belonging: Laterite Moorings used mundane materials that are loaded with gestures of labour, construction, food and sustenance to draw attention of the viewers to acts of adapted rituals. Here an initiation sound is created with construction tools.

Laterite stone pieces were later ground on a granite stone to make the pigment to be worn on the face as well as to create forms drawn on fabric. A ship, a pair of eyes, a human body and a fruit of cashew were drawn with the pigment.

A gathering at Van Gogh House

Ingredients of Encounters

Hosted with @ayeshaxsingh on 27th January, at 4:00 pm
at 87 Hackford Road, SW9 0RE

As a key to participation, we urged people to bring an “ingredient” to the gathering. An ingredient could be anything edible (or not), or any object, or material with which one already had a story or wanted to create one.

As a continuation of a series of participatory performance gatherings hosted in collaboration with Ayesha Singh, this work was arrived at after two former gatherings hosted on 30th and 31st July 2022 titled "Recipoems: Trails of Reciprocity" at Myatt's Field Park and "Carefully Attend" at Van Gogh House. This series of works have been conceived and developed as part of the Van Gogh House residency, supported by Minerva.

What a wrap to the Open Day!

We were happy to have you all at the Open Day of Kala aur Kitabein 2025–26 at the FICA Reading Room.

Throughout the day, children were busy installing their artworks, setting up selfie zones, and curating their work on the walls. Through typography, mark-making, zines, and scroll painting, they explored foods, places, monuments, vehicles, memories, plants, and livelihoods.

The day was filled with a film screening, a shared meal, a walkthrough, and an open mic performance, where children shared awareness around consent through storytelling, rap, song, and dance.

Kala aur Kitabein is a collaboration between Artreach India and FICA, supported by Yashodhara Dalmia. Over the past year, children from three community library spaces came together for regular art workshops, guided by artist educators Jyothidas K V and Tilottama B.

The Grumpy Cat and Co. held our first supper club on Saturday.
We planned a special Onam menu, inspired by food you eat at homes and on the streets, as you travel through Kerala.
Despite the heat and the fourth floor, we're so glad so many people came, ate and made conversation!
.
Thank you @delhifoodies for providing us with the photographs.
(Although as they say, the measure of success here was in how people felt at home, and in the conversations around food and community that was had.)
.
Looking forward to more food, vibes and etc. hosted by our very own Aye Julie!

A wonderful and vibrant Sunday was spent at the FICA Reading Room, celebrating the Open Day for Kala aur Kitabein, an Artreach India and FICA programme supported by Yashodhara Dalmia.

As the second year of the programme came to a close, we gathered at the Reading Room to reflect on the year and celebrate all that the children had learnt, explored and experienced with artist educator @jyothidaskv , and @tilottama_ from the Artreach team. The children took over the library for the day, moving from wall to wall, deciding how their artworks would be displayed.

One wall of the Reading Room became a dictionary of Delhi – a collection of words, feelings, places and things that the children associate with the city. From Humayun’s Tomb, Yamuna ghat to momos and rajma chawal, the dictionary captured the many different things that make Delhi home.

The library also came alive with stories of trees and our various associations and memories with them – like seeing an especially magnificent one on the way to one’s grandmother’s home. Maps of the neighbourhoods surrounding the participating libraries, and pop-up books opened into entire worlds of their own.

The children prepared speeches, performances and skits for the group, sharing their experiences and ideas with remarkable confidence. The day ended on a suitably celebratory note – with dancing and a samosa party!

As Kala aur Kitabein enters its third year, we are delighted that our small group of children from Lado Sarai, who have been regular visitors to the FICA Reading Room for the past year, will also be participating. They are eager to make new friends and share their own experiences of the space.

We look forward to seeing this growing group of young readers continue to build confidence, curiosity and a sense of belonging through art-making – and to discover all the new worlds they will create together.

The exhibition of the children’s work is on display at the FICA Reading Room up till 31st August.

With participants from @mehrauli_community_library , @tara_childprotection and @kitabein_bolti_hain .

Monday - Saturday, 10:30 am – 6:00 pm. Do drop by! by @jyothidaskv

What makes a place feel like home?

For the opening of Overland, there’s shorter time to dream by @latitude_28, artist Jyothidas K V presented Home is an External Affair, a performance that reflected on home as something continually shaped through encounters, movement, memory, and community.

Rooted in @jyothidaskv’s ongoing practice of exploring belonging through food, geography, and shared experience, the performance invited audiences to consider how identities are formed not only by where we come from, but by the relationships and rituals we build along the way.

The work echoed the exhibition’s broader reflections on migration, displacement, and the many ways we continue to carry and create home.
