My birthday was over the weekend. And in the last few years, I have not been able to celebrate it because of severe anxiety.
.
This year, I decided I will bake a cake for myself. A couple of friends convinced me to turn up for myself, because why wouldn't I if they were doing it for me. So I did.
.
The cake was my favourite - a soft German chocolate with just the right amount of moisture.
The filling, I decided to experiment with. A pecan pie filling, adapted to more locally available walnuts and almonds. A salted caramel made from Desi Khand. (A tip from the amazing @rudraisravi)
.
The result was a cake that was just right for a bunch of millennials who don't like too much buttercream fillings. Also for those of us who have lactose and sugar tolerance issues.
.
Proud of myself for so many reasons, but mostly for having the friends I do!

A birthday thing!
.
The last few years have been incredibly difficult to acknowledge, especially on birthdays. I was prone to anxiety attacks and spending the entire month making myself miserable.
It felt criminal to want a good day.
.
But friends persisted. They stayed when it was difficult to scrape myself off the bed. When I cancelled a coffee date last minute because it felt safer to stay indoors, away from the possibility of people turning up.
Two years back I sobbed for an hour while one of them held my hand.
Last year, I shut myself in the bathroom because our wonderful neighbour walked in with cake.
.
This year, I talked to them about how difficult it has been, not just in the last few years, but in general. So when September came around, they insisted on not letting me feel like I had been feeling. And I conceded.
I did not expect any of this, only that I would like to make a cake for myself.
.
But we had a wonderful day. There was conversation, food, and even balloons! And love and warmth and just a lot of things that fills my heart.
.
And the amazing puppers of JNU, who have never not been the reason to get through another year.
.
Here's to life... And the family we find on the way!
Thank you for everything!!

Simple Pupcakes for the Party Pupper!
.
The problem with a lot of dog/pet safe cake recipes are that they do not take into account the discerning palettes of our indies who live as community animals.
Applesauce? Carrots? Trying to sneak in vegetals?
.
One thing that seems to work is a basic pound cake. It's safer overall, because it doesn't use vanilla extract. But it does use white sugar. That is, until I found out coconut sugar was safe for dogs.
.
At Grumpy Cat and Co, we really do care about having cakes that hoomans and their floofers can share.
So we have developed a soft sponge cake that feels like a caramel toffee, and has none of the nasties that the floofers need to avoid!
.
Just wholesome and inclusive yummyness!
.
PS: This is a test batch. We shall report back with responses from the competent pawthorities very soon.

What a wrap to the Open Day!

We were happy to have you all at the Open Day of Kala aur Kitabein 2025–26 at the FICA Reading Room.

Throughout the day, children were busy installing their artworks, setting up selfie zones, and curating their work on the walls. Through typography, mark-making, zines, and scroll painting, they explored foods, places, monuments, vehicles, memories, plants, and livelihoods.

The day was filled with a film screening, a shared meal, a walkthrough, and an open mic performance, where children shared awareness around consent through storytelling, rap, song, and dance.

Kala aur Kitabein is a collaboration between Artreach India and FICA, supported by Yashodhara Dalmia. Over the past year, children from three community library spaces came together for regular art workshops, guided by artist educators Jyothidas K V and Tilottama B.

The Grumpy Cat and Co. held our first supper club on Saturday.
We planned a special Onam menu, inspired by food you eat at homes and on the streets, as you travel through Kerala.
Despite the heat and the fourth floor, we're so glad so many people came, ate and made conversation!
.
Thank you @delhifoodies for providing us with the photographs.
(Although as they say, the measure of success here was in how people felt at home, and in the conversations around food and community that was had.)
.
Looking forward to more food, vibes and etc. hosted by our very own Aye Julie!

STREET FOOD. Despite what my gram may depict, I love street food. So I hopped onto a cab and landed at @grumpycatinthekitchen 's street style Onam Sadhya. The porotta & the mushroom pepper fry had us swooning 🥰🥰 And the morning after, I made my own Sadhya but more about that later.

Lots of food, lots of love and lots of hosting by Julie.
.
It's been a rough year so far, and nothing helps you get through it like sharing food and drink and conversation.
.
Onam is particularly getting rewritten as the one for restoring a bit of hope.
Here's to being able to hold space for each other and finding happiness in the dampest, hottest, weirdest weather!
