When I first came to Bristol Bay in 2008, I was chasing stories. The salmon runs, the giant rainbows, the bears I’d only heard about. Something told me I’d stay long before I had any of them.

This month, Maxim published one of those stories about the place Justin and I built.

Nick Stecher spent four days with us at 58*N: Beaver fly-outs over Katmai, Dollies on the fly, Chef Jason’s dinners, and a day at Brooks Falls he won’t forget (ask him about the three bears). Jeremy Koreski’s photos made me see home all over again.

When we bought this old fishing camp, the whole point was to build real hospitality around the wildness, not replace it. Reading Nick’s piece, it felt like we got there. That belongs to our guides, our kitchen, our pilot, our hospitality and everyone who pounded nails and hauled dirt with us.

Thanks for the birthday wishes! My day was full of love and joy spending it on a small stream with two friends and watching them profess their love for each other as she said “yes!” Plus I got a beautiful rainbow on a streamer that took me into my backing. Followed by an amazing meal and cake from the chefs @thelodgeat58north and a serenade of music from one of our guests. Perfect day! taken in The Lodge at 58 North by @k8crump
