There’s been a lot of conversation lately about who belongs in fly fishing, who deserves opportunities, and what this community should look like. I’ve been thinking about that a lot. And when I look back at the people I’ve met and the experiences I’ve shared through this sport, I keep coming back to the same thing: I’d rather see more people feel welcome than watch us find reasons to push each other out.

Over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to photograph and host women’s fly fishing trips, and I’ve seen firsthand what happens when people are given the space to learn, ask questions, make mistakes, celebrate each other and simply enjoy being on the water. Nobody starts out knowing everything. We all have something to learn, something to share, and our own reasons for being drawn to fly fishing. I believe there’s room for all of us, and that we have a responsibility to make sure people actually feel that way.

Making fly fishing more welcoming and accessible takes more than saying everyone belongs. It means recognizing the barriers that exist, supporting those working to remove them, and creating opportunities for more people to participate.

And beyond the friendships, the fish and the experiences, I believe there’s something even bigger at stake. When more people have the opportunity to connect with the places we fish, they have the chance to develop a deeper appreciation for the fish, wildlife and ecosystems that make those experiences possible.

The more people who find a connection to our waters and wild places, the more people we have who might stand up for them.

We need more people who care. Not fewer.🫶

Located on the top of the Alaska Peninsula, The Lodge at 58* North plays like a Fortress of Solitude for the naturalist / obsessed angler set. It is a sliver of idyllic comfort & frontier luxury - mind-blowing cuisine, veggies + herbs grown on-site; beautiful but minimalist Douglas fir cabins + Scandinavian design — in one of the most virgin areas on the planet.

Just on the edge of 4-million acres of the Katmai National Park, we saw brown bears in the wild, red fox, mink, eagles of several stripes - & managed to catch some sockeye + king salmon along the way. Credit owners Kate + Justin Crump, their elite guides & the equipment like their intrepid Beaver seaplane, which supplies views of untouched landscape you will never forget in your life. Incredible what @TheLodgeat58North is able to accomplish here on the edge of the world. Full feature upcoming in MAXIM.
