2026 has been a bruiser.

And also there is important and exciting work to do! All the moments are crucial but right now is rully critical in our efforts to develop beautiful and bold narratives that envision communityscapes punctuated by self determination.

This work requires art and immersive experiences where people can play, map and dream together through concrete hands on experiences that serve to strengthen the imaginative muscle we NEED right now.

Im hoping to secure collaborations that support critical base building and youth development from now through '28.

Please reach out and share. Looking forward to working together. by @k8deciccio

My niece & I convinced my mom that @bigelownurseries could use some swag in honor of alllllllll the Native plants they bring to yards across Central MA. Last time I was home, I had time to nerd out on design while moms explained how serviceberry, redbud and evening primrose are bffs w/ all the birds we admire. Spring has been extremely slow to usher in sunny saturdays and warm this year. Now that June is here, hit @bigelownurseries Garden Center, bring home some color & pick up a long sleeve! Available in unisex adult S-2XL, printed on comfort colors so super cozy! Big thanks to the incredible @malokul202 for endlessly crisp printing muscle! #nativeplants #birdwatchers by @k8deciccio

We're here today to highlight Kate DeCiccio, another incredible partner of our current exhibition, Let’s Get Free: Ecologies of Care, Love & Abolition. Kate lives and works out in Oakland, with much of her featured work as a part of the Planting Justice organization, led by a group of formerly incarcerated dads.

Planting Justice employs people impacted by mass incarceration providing the skills and resources to cultivate food sovereignty, economic justice, and community healing. In 2020, Kate DeCiccio, Hiroyo Kaneko and Malaya Tuyay began collaborating with the Planting Justice staff at their nursery in East Oakland.

Throughout the pandemic, weekly creative workshops playing with cyanotypes using natural materials and portraiture forged relationships and the desire to deepen the co-creation process. At the time, the majority of the nursery team had recently returned home from prison and welcomed a space to reflect on the teachings of the plants in real time re-rooting. Poetry workshops led to screenprinting and collective imagining sessions about how to weave story and art into the space where the team propagates, grafts, grows and ships plants.

In 2025, the project produced a zine weaving together community interviews, fruit tree family portraits and hands-on workshops curiously examining the abolitionist principles of fruit trees. Art created in the workshops is installed throughout the nursery and creates a correspondence with the zine and plants that visitors can experience while they pick out plants for their yards.

Don't miss the last few days to see her installation of cyanotype + screenprinted pennants made of deconstructed prison uniforms and images from Planting Justice projects.

Yolanda Harden and @sol.boricua.2020 led the planting of the 1st victims healing garden on the yard at the largest women's prison in CA, CCWF.

When we 1st began imagining with Jackie Sumell @freedomtogrownola who could be the solitary gardeners for the 2 gardens at the Planting Justice Farmstore, Sol insisted Yolanda was a must!

While @jackie_sumell and I were in Sol's office last spring, Yolanda called. With Yolanda on speaker phone calling from the prison, we huddled around the phone while Yolanda expressed her ideas for the garden.

"It needs to have lillies and tulips and food, a pomegranate tree and flowers, chains breaking. I want to share about my understanding of true accountability and the ripple effect. Please name all of the people I have impacted and include a ladybug and butterfly. That's my sister and I, healing. The garden will symbolize my commitment to heal and support the healing of others"

The cement of the solitary garden is made of revolutionary mortar mixing together components of the cement walls we seek to abolish. The forced labor in CA prisons is largely factory work manufacturing materials for the prison and CA industries. We put shredded prison uniforms in our mortar symbolizing the components of ongoing slavery that will fall as we grow toward life affirming ways of being. Yolanda's garden will overtake the cement features of the cell modeling how nature will one day take back all sites of Incarceration.

I had the very special assignment of creating art to magnify Yolanda's ideas♡ She was a fantastic art director!

Huge huge thanks to Freedom to Grow for your generosity in vision & spirit partnering with @planting.justice as we build a space to practice abolition led by relationships forged by plant knowledge! by @k8deciccio

One of my favorite parts of 2025 has been the opportunity to braid together some of my favorite artists and friends into the Planting Justice Farmstore dream machine.

@jackie_sumell said yes & invited us to New Orleans for a big ole "Imagine if...." session last spring. @sol.boricua.2020 has been creating gardens inside CA prisons statewide. @hawklinemonster was like, "This site must lift and connect all things plants x abolition!"

This solitary garden features the visions of Loi Voy who spent 27 years on deathrow and was recently commutated to a sentence in the mainline population of San Quentin due to the grace of his victims family. While planting the victims healing garden on the upper yard of San Quentin, through tears he shared how it felt to have his hands in soil. "I didn't touch grass for 27 years. A tiny weed would grow from the crack in my floor & whenever I could, I'd water it. It was the only life in there with me." Loi wanted his garden to be filled with food & healing plants lifted by the energy of hummingbirds, a creature that visits the SQ healing garden often. Mullen shoots up from the middle surrounded by hummingbird sage & passionfruit vines. Dandelion stretching through a floow crack hug the sides of the garden & hummingbirds carry Voi's words.

So grateful to end the year painting this story of redemption and commitment to repair & life. by @k8deciccio

For 3 generations the Adachi family ran their nursery in El Sobrante, including through years of internment during WWII. When they decided to close the family business, they hoped the site could live on as a community spot where people came for all their planting needs. Over the following few years several plans emerged and after almost becoming a gas station 😱...@farmersmarketpj partnered with @thegoodtablecafe to create a farmstore nursery & café.

Over the last year I've had the incredible pleasure to scheme with @hawklinemonster & @sol.boricua.2020 to imagine how to fill the space with interactive stories of abolition.

The very 1st project was creating a water tank mural to honor the history of the space. In collaboration with @jetsonorama and the Adachi family, we wove together family photos and imagery from the stories they shared to create this piece. Wendy and Paul Adachi shared about how their grandfather started the SF flowermarket & grandmother was a skilled ikebana artist who attracted many customers to come buy her masterfully arranged flowers. @kanekohiroyo helped connect me with her friend Akiko who invited me to the classroom of her friend and master ikebana instructor Soho Sahai. Observing Soho's class, was unbelievable. She was funny and serious and completely mesmerizing in her wit and dedication to assisting her students to play with the drama and attitude of each piece of their arrangements. She shared about learning the art of ikebana alongside grandma Adachi, and incredible coincidence an blessing!

The ikebana on the mural is the arrangement Soho created in class & is a nod to the artistry of the matriarch of the Adachi family.

The most precious parts of making murals are the way they ask us to follow the story. Thank you so much @jetsonorama for dreaming together how this might be, for our adventures to the flower market & misadventures to Japantown. Thank you to the Adachi family for trusting us with your story & sharing so many family treasures to work from.

Go see this beautiful piece and so much more at the Planting Justice Farmstore...open now! by @k8deciccio
