What does true freedom and justice look like for young people? As we kick off Youth Justice Action Month, we’re excited to launch a national billboard campaign featuring YFJCo’s Block x Block Fellows answering that question.  Imagining A Future Without Youth Incarceration, part of @thejusttrust’s Justice & The Next 250 campaign, reimagines the future of youth incarceration by harnessing youth voices and cultural strategy. In tandem with partners’ strategic campaign events, the billboards will roll out across New Orleans, Albuquerque, Wichita, and Minneapolis this fall.

Campaign partners: @fflicla @swopista @progeny @legalrightscenter #YJAM2026 reminds us that real justice requires investing in young people, not incarcerating them. When we invest in justice-impacted youth, their power and leadership become the ultimate catalyst to dismantle systemic harms and build a world where every young person can thrive. Shoutout @lilfilmmakers for making this dope reel!

They write, “The film grows from trust, dialogue, and ethical collaboration, grounded in a belief that art can be a tool for social change.” Come experience it for yourself at one of our upcoming public screenings: → Morehouse Human Rights Film Festival September 25 | Atlanta, GA (Link in bio for tickets) → Bushwick Film Festival October 7–11 | Brooklyn, NY → Or reach out to us to schedule a screening in your area! #TheEndOfIsolation #DocumentaryFilm #Abolition #PrisonReform

Big thanks to @bronxartspace for including art from the No Kids In Prison magazine and the Freedom Constellations exhibit in their “It Take A Village” exhibit about the power of communal care over cages. Curated by Beverly Emers, the exhibition features work by justice-impacted artists telling stories of survival, resistance and community healing. Come see the large-scale multi-paneled art piece that became the cover of the magazine, a collaborative work by a dozen young artists currently inside Nassau County Juvenile Detention Center. The exhibit finishes its run this Thursday through Saturday at Bronx Art Space, 700 Manida Street, ground floor (enter on Spofford Avenue).   The “It Takes A Village” theme refers to the long community fight to close Spofford Juvenile Detention Center, an intake facility for children under 15 who were awaiting trial or placement into other facilities. For 54 years, Spofford locked up predominantly Black and Latine youth from the Bronx’s poorest neighborhoods.  Since its closure in 2011, the site has been redeveloped and transformed into a community-centered, mixed-use campus, featuring affordable housing, community and recreation spaces, artist studios, a wellness center, supermarket, public plaza and early childhood education center. The Peninsula, as the former site of Spofford is now called, will support more than 300 permanent jobs for local residents.  The best way to end youth incarceration is by investing in what children and families actually need to thrive in their own communities – affordable housing, neighborhood amenities and good jobs. We’re proud to have our work on display in a place that shows what’s possible if we commit to #NoKidsInPrison.  Magazine Cover Art Info: bigger picture, 7.5 x 7.5 foot charcoal drawing created by nine different students at Nassau County Juvenile Detention Center, New York. Η καμπάνια «No ICE in the Cup» διεκδικεί ένα Παγκόσμιο Κύπελλο χωρίς φόβο, χωρίς διώξεις και χωρίς επιχειρήσεις απέναντι στις μεταναστευτικές κοινότητες. 🧊 📌Έκθεση αφισών «No ICE in the Cup» 📍 27ο Αντιρατσιστικό Φεστιβάλ Αθήνας 📍 3, 4 και 5 Ιουλίου 📍 Άλσος Γουδή #No #ICE #mundial #cup #artists

TODAY!!! Sneak out of the heat and come in for the last day of the Let’s Get Free exhibition! We’re open till 5pm.  For an exhibit focused on contemporary art projects that imagine a more free world beyond our broken carceral systems, it was important to ground the work in abolitionist history. Sourcing the incredible research by Samuel Black at the Smithsonian’s Heinz History Center as inspiration, we worked with local poet and historian Dennis Williams II to choose native plants to Virginia that likely were used by those escaping slavery for food, medicine, guidance, camouflage, defense, and spirituality. HUGE thanks to our old bud Ross Munroe and Thistle and Rose who then gathered up those plants and transformed the gallery’s front window into a beautiful abolitionist garden. One of our favorite days of the exhibit was walking up to 1708 to see the pokeweed and magnolia blooming through the window and finding the blackberry bush reaching 6 feet to rest its leaves on the Let’s Get Free book!   To accompany the garden, Dennis wrote an incredibly powerful poem entitled Taxonomy of Our Liberation. Here’s Dennis describing his piece titled Taxonomy of Our Liberation: “the following text refuses subordination to such grammar. Here, taxonomy is reworked into relationality within a fugitive discourse of oneness, kinship, refusal, and repair. Through this reappropriation and through what Saidiya Hartman names "critical fabulation," the text imagines insurgent acts in which the terms of order are commandeered and turned toward ancestral legacy to form a new abolitionist cosmology. Serial repetition becomes ritual incantation. Nomenclature is inverted into protective invocations for fugitives of the law. Processes historically and ontologically tied to the act of capture (e.g., curating, collecting, cataloging) are transformed by their refusal. Relationality, rememory, and the material conditions of freedom bend Linnaean taxonomy toward our liberation.”  Endless thanks to so many friends, heroes and homies for making the exhibit, all the rad programming, and so much more possible. It’s been a work of love and so honored to be in it with you all. So much more to do🖤

We're here today to highlight Kate DeCiccio, another incredible partner of our current exhibition, Let’s Get Free: Ecologies of Care, Love & Abolition. Kate lives and works out in Oakland, with much of her featured work as a part of the Planting Justice organization, led by a group of formerly incarcerated dads. Planting Justice employs people impacted by mass incarceration providing the skills and resources to cultivate food sovereignty, economic justice, and community healing. In 2020, Kate DeCiccio, Hiroyo Kaneko and Malaya Tuyay began collaborating with the Planting Justice staff at their nursery in East Oakland. Throughout the pandemic, weekly creative workshops playing with cyanotypes using natural materials and portraiture forged relationships and the desire to deepen the co-creation process. At the time, the majority of the nursery team had recently returned home from prison and welcomed a space to reflect on the teachings of the plants in real time re-rooting. Poetry workshops led to screenprinting and collective imagining sessions about how to weave story and art into the space where the team propagates, grafts, grows and ships plants. In 2025, the project produced a zine weaving together community interviews, fruit tree family portraits and hands-on workshops curiously examining the abolitionist principles of fruit trees. Art created in the workshops is installed throughout the nursery and creates a correspondence with the zine and plants that visitors can experience while they pick out plants for their yards. Don't miss the last few days to see her installation of cyanotype + screenprinted pennants made of deconstructed prison uniforms and images from Planting Justice projects. Although we are reaching the end of our current exhibition, Let’s Get Free: Ecologies of Care, Love & Abolition, we continue to celebrate the many partners and their work, which have left a mark on visitors. One such partner is jackie sumell, who built ""flush the system"", pictured above, and facilitated our Abolitionist Tea Party last month. 🚽 Cast from a prison sink in a decommissioned Louisiana jail, this work is formed from a biodegradable “Revolutionary Mortar”, a building material invented by sumell to create Solitary Gardens. The mortar is composed of sugarcane, cotton, tobacco, and natural hydraulic lime, materials bound to histories of forced labor and extraction. For this installation, expungement records, prayers and local organic materials were ceremoniously embedded, extending the legacy of the prison sink as a site of both limitation and desperate innovation. 🍵 During the first weekend of this show, jackie lead a participatory ritual of tea and dialogue, connecting plants grown by incarcerated people to conversations about abolition and healing. The Abolitionist’s Tea Party asked: How does the natural world endorse abolition as a strategy for liberation? If we accept abolition as a commitment to ending cycles of harm, we can begin to see all the ways the natural world informs the tenets of human abolition. Participants learned how plants have played key roles in stories of resistance and shared their experience and understanding of abolition. These photos from building the compost toilet and tea party hold so much of jackie's spirit in them. Follow her online to see what she continues to work on! Pride has always been about more than visibility. It’s about refusing systems that decide who deserves safety, prosperity, joy, and belonging. We are honored to feature the work of artists and activists what have helped us build campaigns that explores questions of both liberation and imagination. We are so grateful to our queer and trans communities who continue to help us envision something better.
