It all started with a sketchbook.

Before the exhibitions, installations, and finished artworks, there were markers, notebooks, and ideas scattered across the floor.

Swipe through:
✏️ Slide 1 — Where it all began.
🌿 Slide 2 — The artist behind the work.
📖 Slide 3 — A peek inside the sketchbook.
🎨 Slide 4 — A sketch brought to life.
⚡ Slide 5 — Another original sketch.
🖼️ Slide 6 — The finished artwork.
✍🏾 Slide 7 — Yet another concept from the archives.
✨ Slide 8 — The final transformation.

Many of my mask-inspired works begin as simple drawings in a sketchbook. Over time, those sketches evolve through color, texture, found objects, and mixed media into pieces that explore identity, imagination, and Afrofuturist storytelling.

As artists, we’re often quick to share the finished work. Today, I wanted to share the beginning.

Which slide is your favorite—the sketch or the final artwork?

Hi, I’m K. Medulla — the artist behind K. Medulla Studios.

Most people discover my work through the finished pieces, but what you don’t always see are the sketchbooks, experiments, late nights, and years spent developing a visual language that feels like my own.

As a curator and multidisciplinary artist based in Atlanta, I’m interested in the ways art can connect us to memory, identity, imagination, and possibility. My current work explores Afrofuturism through mixed media, found objects, texture, and storytelling.

Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about beginnings.

Before the exhibitions.
Before the installations.
Before the finished artworks.

There was simply a person with a sketchbook and an idea.

Thank you for following along as I continue to create, learn, and share the journey.

I’d love to know: How long have you been following my work?

A little glimpse into the life behind the art. ✨

Nature inspires me. Ideas keep me curious. And creating? That’s the lifestyle.

Just following the inspiration wherever it leads and letting the work unfold. 🎨🌿

I had the pleasure of witnessing exhibition “Away with the Tides” by painter Calida Rawless @calidagarciarawles presented at @spelmanmuseum The Spelman Museum. A phenomenal tour was led by poetic and knowledgeable curator @mingjoi for Black Girls in Art Spaces @blackgirlsinartspaces event. Artist Rawless captures the history and healing of water through the eyes of African Americans.

Water is my favorite element because its ability to bring me back into wholeness. Its ability to cleanse stagnant energy. The artwork I’m standing in front of titled “Away with the Tides,” resonated with me because I saw myself as this figure draped in yellow being welcomed to wash away peacefully. Checkout this exhibition through September 5th, Wednesday-Saturday 12-5pm.

ASKAI 🌸
“Sacred Bloom” collection continues to unfold.

Askai is a celebration of adornment, symbolism, and the beauty found in thoughtful details. Every button, texture, and mark was intentionally chosen to become part of the figure’s story.

This carousel follows the journey—from the finished work to the small moments that often go unseen. Because sometimes the process reveals just as much as the final piece.

Thank you for following along as this collection continues to bloom.

Sometimes the most productive thing you can do is step away from posting and step deeper into creating. ✨

The last couple of weeks have been spent in the studio, sketching, experimenting, and letting new ideas unfold. This piece is part of a new collection I’m building called Sacred Bloom—a series exploring identity, adornment, and the quiet power of becoming.

This carousel is a little glimpse behind the scenes: the first sketch, the space where I’m creating, and a few moments that remind me art is just as much about the process as the finished piece.

Happy first of the month. Here’s to making room for creativity, growth, and whatever is waiting to bloom. 🌸

What slide is your favorite?

✨ New Art Placement ✨

Three of my original Afrofuturism masks are now available for purchase at At Ease ATL on Auburn Avenue.

There’s something special about seeing artwork leave the studio and enter a space where people can connect with it in person. These pieces are rooted in themes of identity, ancestry, spirituality, and imagined futures, brought to life through mixed media and sculptural storytelling.

I’m especially grateful to partner with a Black-owned business that values culture, wellness, and community.

If you’re in Atlanta, stop by At Ease ATL @at_ease_atl to experience the work up close. And if one of these masks speaks to you, it can go home with you. 🖤✨

James Brown is my spirit animal! It’s something about his raw energy that fires up my creative juices.

I’ve revisited an old Afrofuturism mask series “The Becoming” started in 2017. Initially there were 3 masks, 2026 I looked over my sketches. I was inspired by the shadow work, so I’m creating more of these masks!

Use brand @krylonbrand Krylon Workable Fixative to seal artwork made with chalk pastel and oil pastel. Use gloves, mask, eyewear for protection from the chemicals. Spray at least 12 inches away to ensure the fixative does not ruin the pastel. I added 3 coats every 15-30 minutes. You can purchase this at any craft store for about $10! Also it’s available on Amazon.
