P2_TheOutpost :

Located at the corner of S Washington St. and Hall of Fame Ave. on Oklahoma State University’s campus. Student space is limited in this area of campus, mostly designated for car traffic and circulation. As a team including myself, and three of my peers, we began this project by looking closer at the OSU campus in this location and figuring out what would make since formally, site wise, and circulation wise. Once our “masterplan” was complete, in the form of a site plan. We chose to divide and conquer, splitting our given build able into 4 parcels to design independently, and reconnect at the end of our project. I was tasked with a portion of the site with ample outdoor space, and a building program of “study & collaboration.” I first looked for ways to separate collaboration from personal study space, I chose to accommodate this through separation by building levels. I then thought about what a student might look for in a space to work; light, privacy, desk space, the list goes on. In plan and section, you can decipher how I combined these things into one building functionally. Even stretching to the outdoors, with a covered outdoor study/work space and an integrated dog park for relaxation and “blowing off steam.”

P2_TheBend :

The Bend is a mass timber construction of an urban multi-use space, including residential units, welders habitat, and childcare. Completed in a team of myself and two peers, we chose to create a building form that would maximize waterfront coverage and urban views. Our site is located on the riverbank in a cold climate in Northeast North America. With this knowledge in our back pocket, we made a choice to utilize solar heating effects through large glass curtain walls, and minimize the transverse effects of windchill and snow buildup with an offset enveloping semi-translucent and mechanized skin condition. This choice of skin envelope allows for solar rays to penetrate and do their job of assisting in heating during winter months, while still blocking wind and snow from touching the enclosure system. Our spaces are laid out in a linear fashion as seen in plan, with main circulation centralized to not takeaway maximum outer views.

P4FINAL_TheSantaFeTrainDepot :

A historic train station in downtown Oklahoma City wanted to be given new life. An adaptive reuse project came about wanting a new connection to the adjacent district of Bricktown, the site for the new OKC Thunder sports arena, and the rest of the country by train! Maintaining the historic integrity of the depot, the main large structure was kept in tact visually and three new architectural solutions were added to create the necessary spaces to keep proper function. First is a glass and steel suspension bridge that connects the next part, a pair of steel, glass, and limestone “boxes”. These first two elements are arguably the most important as the have a rigid steel structural system that coincides with the W&W|AFCO Steel Structure competition that this project was a part of, these were the big ticket solutions that were thought of. The third solution was a tunneling system to connect to first, Bricktown, and second, the outer railway platform. All of this is visible in the plans. The imagery was very important to me in this project, I wanted to communicate that this was an ode to the historical attributes of the original Santa Fe Depot (the majority black and white imagery) and the emphasis of steel structure (the magenta members). These illustrations were important, and they were effectively imagined.

P2_TheUrbanMonastery :

Taoism is an ancient Chinese religion whose people believe in harmony with nature, the universe, and all living things. This urban monastery brings this natural religion to the mid-rise urban environment of Brooklyn, New York. The structure uses a structural steel grid system that anchors into load bearing reinforced concrete walls on the narrow ends of the building. The “pod” which is cantilevered off of the largest face of@the building uses a large truss system and an ultra-light polycarbonate curtain wall as protection from the elements, this is where the worship spaces are housed. The ground interaction is one of the most interesting parts of the monastery, it has a land-stair that brings you above grade and closer to the main attraction (the “pod”). Finally, the louvre system that adorns the large face of the main building allow lighting patterns to flood into the large spaces adding interest and another level of connection back to nature.

P1_TheBookClub :

We started by looking at the architectural typology of a roadside stop (rest stop, gas station, attraction) and created visual imagery from our research. What was important and what makes a roadside stop a roadside stop? Then we took those principles and created our own, that’s where the book club came from. It is a roadside restaurant that doubles as a large scale “little free library”. You take a book, leave a book, have a meal, look around, whatever you want. It takes on the typology of the canopy that you would find at a gas station, creating usable outdoor space. Finally the main attraction was the playful roofline that is visible in section and elevation, it takes on a butterfly roof shape that was common in the older days of roadside stops. The construction uses a combination of steel which holds up the polycarbonate rain screen, and a glue-lam wood beam structure for the roofs.

P4FINAL_AVisitorCenter :

The focus of this was on the facade and street frontage. We took trips to the local downtown and studied how the facades of the stores interacted with the street, the sidewalks, and the surroundings. I took the elements of canopies and incorporated it into a layered facade system with a mechanical louvre system to allow customized lighting patterns into the interior. The inclusion of a parapet was integral to the recognition of historical storefronts in the American Downtown… ICONOGRAPHY.

P3_TheSubversiveRodeo :

The American South, covered in rodeo land and arena. Take it, twist it, reform it, make it new. They say “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” but we fixed it even though it wasn’t broken. Stretch, elevate, spectate. I took the key elements of a rodeo; the arena, the announcer stand, the spectator, and the raised booth and applied those three principles to them. Creating this series of elevated paths for spectators to watch competitors from above, creating a new and always moving perspective. I broke it, so that I could fix it.

P1_formREVELATION :

Creating something new from something old, and creating something new from something that doesn’t exist. Thinking from a new angle of imagination, what is this place, what was it, why is that there. We were given an image with no context, told to exaggerate a part of it in a way that maybe made no sense. Ambiguity of form.

SlideThree : Part one line drawing
SlideFour : Part two original doctored image

Part_1 : In 1975G, explorers land in a desolate North America, discovering a peculiar structure. Inside, scaffolded seating faces a raised stage, resembling a worship center. A chapel, scattered pages with rhythmic symbols, and a cylindrical room revealing stars suggest humans once revered nature, the cosmos, or something greater. Mystery lingers.

PART_2 : Explorers encounter a vast, intricate structure filled with protruding features, towering scaffolded seating, and a stage. It resembles a worship site, with chapels and pamphlets scattered throughout.
A cylindrical room reveals infinite darkness, stars, and planets, hinting that humans revered nature and the cosmos in a beautifully planned, awe-inspiring space.

P4FINAL_CommunityCenter :

The community center is in Stillwater, Oklahoma and is meant to serve as a new connection to an existing outdoor and service driven area. Adjacent to the local food pantry and a large park/sports arena, the community center provides added interior space for more activity in this already bustling area. The form is derived from the shape of the site and split into three different structures allowing spatial organization to be a breeze. The construction is a classic post/beam construction with glass curtain walls and flat roof “hats”. These glass forms have protruding concrete tubular forms that house important spaces including a performance space, classrooms, and a reading room. You can also see as the forms grow in size, their height grows with them, creating a stair-stepping form representing new steps toward access and inclusion in this area of Stillwater.
