10 yrs ago, I was still in the early stages of a career I didn’t know was meant for me. Never would have guessed that working behind a bar meant I’d be teaching, mentoring, creating community, and trying my best to make safe places for people to feel loved and seen.
It’s been about two decades of this industry, and over a decade of bars. I’m grateful for my community and this life I live.

I’m grateful for this body that can still make a few hundred cocktails in a shift and lift kegs and give high fives, hugs, and handshakes when needed.

But most of all, I’m grateful for my people. Sometimes we’re in our corners of the world getting out of the weeds—knowing they’re in their corners handling their side of the service. Sometimes we’re sharing a well. But service industry folks are the best type of folks. That is a hill I’ll die on.

Some parts of our industry are really hurting right now. It’s always true. But with our government attacking every angle of the food and service industry—rounding up my friends and neighbors like they aren’t even human, wrecking the economy so folks can’t have simple pleasures, and hallowing out our communities with fear mongering—we must find every way to be there for each other. To check in. To love each other well.

That’s my ministry, y’all. I didn’t grow up to become a teacher or a missionary in the way it was said it would be. And now I find myself teaching and preaching daily about community. It’s hard to make a dent of difference in this world. But that’s my agenda.

My heart is aching right now for the people we keep losing to this broken, tyrannical government. Do what you can for those you can when you can. That’s all that we can do. And it matters. by @kadellis
