My beautiful, hilarious, ornery, rebellious, reliable grandmother died on Thursday. It's been very difficult to deal with this being away from my family but I live across the ocean now.

The last time I saw her I knew it would be the last but I hoped for more time. We ate butter pecan ice cream and went through pictures. She told me about her cousins. She told me she wanted to leave her assisted living.

We planned a get away. I told her I would come get her over the summer and we'd take a road trip to visit her cousins in Arkansas.

She told everyone she was allergic to chicken when she simply didn't like it. She was a hypnotherapist and believed the most powerful tool we had was an open mind, she was passionate about her craft. We had many opposing views and we always had a laugh about them. Some called her the grand pooba - she was a dancer, sometimes a seamstress but she is my grandmother.

Sometimes, I think she might be a witch because her home was covered in beautiful gems, rocks, and stones. She had a healing wand and a dedicated popcorn bowl. A wicked sense of humor.

I'm very thankful I was able to see her, hold her, help her into chairs and onto bed. It doesn't make up for the years of lost time nor the missed calls.

It doesn't help that I live across the ocean and away from my family - but it's been like that since 2009. I've lived very far away for a long time and I can't help but feel a bit of #hiraeth for America (mostly my family). Despite living far away- i just don't think American society cares for their elderly unless it's a paid service and our culture does not encourage families to remain close.

My grandmother was a #veteran of the women's army corps leaving her home at a young age. Veterans issues were deeply important to my grandmother. Although she left her family at a young age she was dedicated to the family she created, she loved her country, she loved her independence. She's wandering again. Maybe she hitched a ride in the northern lights. I wouldn't be here without her. We- two wanderers.

Baby's first live performance of original songs. I knew I'd cry singing and having ADHD and being on stimulants made me feel it way more but I got through the song, mostly in tears!

I sang Earth, AWAL (All Wars Are Lies), and Sunspell! Which you should definitely stream on your preferred music app or whateva!
