For Kaede James Takamoto, photography is less about capturing a moment and more about building a feeling around it. A Queer Japanese-Australian photographer, her images intertwine the real and the surreal – shaped by collaboration, instinct and an interest in the layered nature of identity.

Living and working in Naarm (Melbourne), Kaede’s practice spans fashion, portraiture and conceptual image-making. Raised by two sculptors, she grew up surrounded by art and experimentation, a legacy that continues to inform her work today.

Sharing more of my film diaries 💓💓

This is a bit more personal than I usually get on here but I’ve been thinking about my second home, a lot more than usual because of the recent earthquake, and all the awful things that have happened during and after (my feed and news reel is truely just sharing everything).
When trapped in the news cycle, it can make you feel hopeless… Maybe im just doing this for my own sake but sharing the warmth, joy and sweetness of Kumamoto feels like my own little rebellion against it all and helps me remember the place that I call home without all the horrors and commodification of doom

The joys of coming back from seeing family + my second home and seeing the email with a download link pop into my notifications! Here’s me posting things a little more personal, but honestly, I miss the joys of early instagram, when things weren’t curated, people used VSCO filters on everything, contrast was too popular, images weren’t perfect but they felt human. 💓

Personally, this is how I started loving photos; capturing simple moments on my grandfathers film camera and sharing them on this platform to my 10 friends and tagging with every film tag under the sun 🌱

A few months ago I had the privilege to capture the entire process of making porcelain and ceramics with @yen.qin and @luzernesg / @luzerneglobal in the porcelain city Dehua, China.

Walking through so many different spaces, meeting people dedicated to their craft and witnessing the beautiful process of working with your hands. It was inspiring, infectious and I couldn’t stop finding those moments of “wow”. It kicked me out of a sort of creative slump I’ve been feeling for the past year and reminded me of all the ways I can create and capture with my camera, I absolutely loved capturing people using their hands and doing something they felt so passionately about! by @kaedejt
