My cracks are not weaknesses. They are windows. Abuse and trauma taught me to read danger and hold space for pain. Being trans gave me the defiant joy of becoming myself. AuDHD shaped a mind that hyperfocuses, spots patterns, and loves fiercely. BPD, the jaggedest crack of all, made me someone who feels everything so deeply that survival itself became strength. I will say it a million times if I have to: I don’t trust cis men. The "Cornell 7" were fraternity brothers, cis men, who drugged and assaulted a woman, then sent a Snapchat bragging about "free p*ssy" to invite others . The DA himself called their behavior "disgusting, despicable, and clearly wrong morally" while debating whether it was technically criminal. Yet somehow, it's drag queens and trans people who get branded as threats to women and children. Immigrants who get called criminals. We are the scapegoats for the violence of patriarchy, while cis men commit it and walk away with essay assignments. The math has never been complicated. Trans Men in Metal: Seen or Just Tolerated? We're the few and far between. The ones who get a moment in the spotlight: if we pass, if we stay quiet, if we don't make anyone uncomfortable. But is that being seen? Or just being allowed to exist on borrowed time? Metal is built on rebellion. Outsiders. Screaming against a world that wants you gone. So why do we still have to hide the parts of ourselves that don't fit the mold? We trade one closet for another. Pass as cis, stay silent, don't mention the history, don't mention the dysphoria, don't mention the fear in the green room or the pit. Just shut up and play. Meanwhile, the world outside wants us erased. And sometimes the scene that's supposed to be home feels just as cold. But here's the thing: We're still here. Still screaming. Many people still don’t take musicians seriously. There’s this bizarre idea that because we love what we do, we must just be “having fun.” As if passion somehow cancels out labor. You wouldn’t walk up to an environmentalist and say, “Wow, you’re having fun caring about the planet, so I guess that’s not really work.” You wouldn’t say that to a lawyer, a scientist, a teacher, an activist, an architect, or anyone else who has devoted their life to something they genuinely care about. So why is it acceptable to say it to musicians? Music takes years of practice. Thousands of hours. Writing, rehearsing, recording, producing, learning instruments, studying, performing, promoting, networking, organizing, traveling, spending money, taking risks, dealing with rejection, and constantly trying to stay relevant in an industry that already makes it incredibly difficult to survive. And now we’re watching AI flood that industry, devaluing human creativity and making it even harder for REAL musicians to make a living from the work they’ve spent their lives developing. This isn’t about being afraid of technology. It’s about watching an industry that already undervalues human artists embrace systems that can replicate, imitate, and replace creative labor while the actual people behind that creativity struggle to pay their bills. We can love music and still be working. In fact, sometimes we work so hard precisely because we love it. Passion doesn’t make labor worthless. Creativity isn’t free. And “you’re having fun” is not an excuse to dismiss someone’s work. The next time you see a musician performing, remember that what looks effortless may have taken decades to become possible. Behind the three-minute song is a lifetime of work. Behind the performance is preparation. Behind the art is a human being trying to make a living doing something they’ve dedicated their life to. So support the people making the music. Buy the record. Go to the show. Pay for the music. Share their work. Hire human musicians. I started as a metal musician. Distortion, volume, catharsis. Then I became a classically trained composer. Counterpoint, orchestration, silence. Both paths led me to the same belief: music is not decoration. It is a weapon. It is a lifeline. It is how we refuse to disappear. Pirate radio is the purest expression of this. When the state monopolized the airwaves, people built their own transmitters. Radio Caroline broadcast from a ship off the coast of Essex, founded by an Irish maverick named Ronan O'Rahilly, whose grandfather was killed in the 1916 Easter Rising. The signal did not care about borders. It did not care about licenses. It just played. Performing with @djinnmtl captures that same energy: bodies in a room, no permission asked, sound as confrontation. Punk did not wait for a record deal. Pirate radio did not wait for a broadcast license. Both understood the gatekeepers would never let them in, so they kicked the door down instead. Jungle & UK garage exploded in London because pirate stations like Kiss FM and Rinse FM were the only places you could hear the future. The heavy hand chokes. Music is how we breathe. In Iran, women were banned from solo singing. So they trained their voices in private and released them online. When Shervin Hajipour posted "Baraye," built from the words of protesters, the regime arrested him the next day. The song still became the anthem of a movement. My Greek & Irish roots taught me this. The Greeks know what it means to keep language and song alive under occupation. The Irish know a rebel song can outlast a prison cell. Rebellion is inheritance. It is passed down. Pirate Radio is my contribution to that lineage. Electronic textures and orchestral weight. It is for everyone who has ever been told their frequency is illegal. For everyone whose music has been called noise. When the state tries to silence you, the only answer is to broadcast louder. Listen. Share.
