Havana, Cuba Travelogue 2

La Música

I’m no expert in music history or Cuban music by any means. However, Cuban music is 🔥! A magnitude of expressions rooted in traditions, influenced by west African percussion and rhythms, and Spanish sounds. From the heart and soul, it ranges from son, bolero, guaracha, rumba, salsa, and more. Here is a glimpse of what I heard on the island.

1. On the beach (a remix): You’ll recognize this salsa song— Llorarás by Afro Venezuelan Oscar D’Leon
2. Afro beats and the violin: I was too busy living in the moment; I wished I got her name!

Havana, Cuba Travelogue 1
1. First leg to Ft Lauderdale
2. Second leg to Havana- We had the plane almost to ourselves.
3. Our home for a few days— it was cute
4. Alicia Alonso’s monumental sculpture by José Villa Soberón located w/in the Gran Teatro of Havana. Alonso was a Cuban prima ballerina and her company became Ballet Nacional de Cuba (The Cuban National Ballet)
5. Sculptor Rafael San Juan’s composite steel work ‘Primavera’ pays homage to the dancers of Cuban National Ballet and the strength of Cuban women.
6. A historic car show (this is the stop for all the tours) at the Plaza De la Revolución. Fidel Castro and other public figures have addressed the Cuban people here and the Jose Marti’ Memorial (The Obelisk)
7. Me flexing in front of the revolutionary Camilo Cienfuegos’ outlined face on a government building. He was a close friend and comrade of Che Guevara. Cienfuegos died mysteriously at age 27 when his plane disappeared over the Straits of Florida
8. Video: Who would know at the Fábrica De Arte (a former cooking oil factory founded by artists and musicians), now an arts space w/ galleries and performance spaces, we would catch the Grammy-winning, composer, pianist, producer Robert Glasper perform. It was completely happenstance!
9. Ernesto ‘Che’ Guevara- the peoples’ leader, revolutionary, freedom fighter, diplomat, and physician (yes, he was a doctor). His images and legacy lives on… to quote him “If you tremble with indignation at every injustice then you are a comrade of mine”

I did a little digging on the origins of the viral ‘black and white’ challenge accepted. While the challenge echoes women empowerment and women supporting women—it’s original focus was to draw attention to femnicide. Turkey reported 474 deaths in 2019 related to violence against women (recently with the murder of Pinar Gultekin who was 27). Most of these cases were domestic violence. El Salvador also has very high cases, and we have many cases here. Most notably, Breonna Taylor and Sandra Bland, not to mention so many more that have died against police brutality, domestic violence, and misogynistic acts- including rape.

I accept this challenge to all my sistas and women who need protection, empowerment, economic freedom, and just plain sisterhood, and love. Let us find our seat at the table and make actionable changes for the good. We are nurturers, we are providers, we love, and we care. We have so much to offer and give. Without us, life would not exist or be. Thank you @concettaduncan and & @megansegarra for nominating me.
