POSTS STORIES REELS

🍳 𝗠𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗮 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗲.
A cooking reel captures a few seconds. What it can't always show is the patience, flexibility, and little decisions that happen around those moments.
Sometimes it's about giving a child space to take the lead. Sometimes it's knowing when to offer support, when to pause, or when to simply enjoy being together.

✨ 𝗔𝗻𝗱 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗮 𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲.

This carousel grew out of conversations with Mr N's mum at @autism_chapters. We wanted to create something that felt like their story, not a checklist of what every family should be doing.

🤍 Thank you for sharing these moments with us and trusting us to bring a little piece of Mr N's Cooking Diaries to life through illustration.

Some words are said with good intentions… but they can still hurt. 💙

Autistic people are often asked to explain, prove, or hide parts of themselves that the world doesn’t immediately understand.

Autism is not something you can “see.”
It is not defined by how someone looks, speaks, plays, learns, or connects.

Every autistic person has their own strengths, challenges, sensory experiences, and ways of experiencing the world.

The first step toward understanding isn’t changing someone — it’s listening to them. 🌱

At Kai & Kind, we believe children thrive when we understand their unique needs, support their nervous systems, and create environments where they feel safe to be themselves.

Save this post as a reminder: curiosity builds connection. 💙

Somehow, a simple school run turns into a full-on action movie when you're a parent.... 😭😂💨🏁

🧦 A tiny seam in a sock feels unbearable. But a missed lunch barely registers.

How can the same child be so sensitive to one sensation and seem to miss another?

Sensory sensitivity isn't one master volume switch. A child may be highly responsive to touch or sound while experiencing internal sensations very differently. Even those internal signals don't necessarily feel equally clear.

That's why describing a child as simply "over-sensitive" or "under-sensitive" can miss the bigger picture.

𝗦𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗶𝗹𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻'𝘁 𝗮𝗹𝗹-𝗼𝗿-𝗻𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴.

A more useful question might be: Which sensation is this child responding to right now?

📌 Save this for the next time your child's sensory responses seem contradictory.

💙 𝗦𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲𝘀, 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗳𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗹𝘆’𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝗲𝘅𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗹𝘆 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗳𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗹𝘆 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗿.

Maybe it's a small change that made mornings easier.

A different approach to a challenging moment.

Or simply the comfort of realizing someone else understands.

🌱 Sharing these experiences can create connection, offer ideas, and help families feel less alone.

And there's something beautiful about learning from different perspectives.

A parent might share what they've noticed and what has helped their family.

An autistic person might describe how a similar experience feels from the inside.

𝘛𝘩𝘦𝘴𝘦 𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘱𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘴 𝘤𝘢𝘯 𝘦𝘯𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘩 𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳.

🧩 𝗢𝗻𝗲 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿:

No two autistic people have exactly the same experiences, preferences, or support needs.

A strategy that helps one person may not be right for another. That's why personal stories can offer possibilities without becoming universal instructions.

💬 Autistics Speaking Day began as a way to make more room for autistic people to share their own experiences.

Some communicate through speech. Others may use writing, AAC, gestures, or a combination of methods.

Each person deserves opportunities to communicate in ways that work for them.

💛 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲’𝘀 𝗿𝗼𝗼𝗺 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀.

To the families who share their experiences, the autistic people who share their insights, and everyone who listens with care: Thank you for helping build a community where we can keep learning from one another. 💙

Their body clock has other plans! 🫠

The clocks went back an hour today, but little internal clocks don't automatically follow.

For some young children, that familiar 6 AM wake-up can suddenly become 5 AM. And for kids who find changes in routine especially difficult, adjusting may take a little more time.

💤 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗸 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁. 𝗦𝗹𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝗿𝗵𝘆𝘁𝗵𝗺𝘀 𝗺𝗮𝘆 𝗻𝗼𝘁.

Keeping familiar bedtime routines, getting natural daylight during the day, and allowing gradual schedule adjustments can help children settle into the new time.

And sometimes, the first morning is simply a very early one. ☕️

🎃 𝗕𝗘𝗦𝗧 𝗛𝗔𝗟𝗟𝗢𝗪𝗘𝗘𝗡 𝗘𝗩𝗘𝗥!

Until the candy bag crinkled. 🍬

For some autistic and sensory-sensitive children, the sounds that feel manageable at one moment can become uncomfortable at another.

And it isn't always about how loud a sound actually is.

Certain sounds can be especially difficult to tolerate, and factors like fatigue, stress, and the surrounding environment may influence how a child experiences them.

Think about everything Halloween can involve: doorbells, excited voices, crowded sidewalks, unfamiliar costumes, changing plans, and a later-than-usual bedtime.

A child might genuinely love every minute of it.

And still arrive home needing much less sensory input.

💜 𝗕𝗼𝘁𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗯𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗲.

Sometimes the first sign is surprisingly small.

A candy wrapper suddenly feels unbearable. Another question is one question too many. Even an ordinary household sound becomes difficult to ignore.

It doesn't necessarily mean the evening went badly.

And it doesn't mean every child needs the same kind of quiet afterward.

🌙 For one child, winding down might mean dimmer lights and putting the candy away until tomorrow. For another, it might mean movement, a familiar activity, or simply some time without conversation.

The helpful part is understanding what feels comfortable for that particular child, rather than expecting the evening to end a certain way.

Because 𝘦𝘯𝘫𝘰𝘺𝘪𝘯𝘨 an experience and 𝘯𝘦𝘦𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘰 𝘳𝘦𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘳𝘨𝘦 afterward aren't opposites.

Sometimes the fun was wonderful.

And the quiet afterward is welcome, too. 🧡

⠀
When Shannon first imagined motherhood, she pictured certain milestones and experiences. Life with Sawyer has unfolded differently, and along the way, Shannon has learned to see beauty in moments she might never have thought to look for.
⠀
One detail she shared stayed with us.
⠀
Sawyer loves to travel, but unfamiliar places can sometimes feel overwhelming. So their family travels in a motorhome, bringing familiar routines along while still making room for new experiences.

It's one of the things we find so meaningful about hearing directly from families. Behind an ordinary moment, there can be so much thought, care, and understanding that others never see.
⠀
Thank you, @shannon_in_moderation, for sharing your perspective so openly and trusting us to bring a piece of your family's story to life. ❤️
