Our social environment asks for 𝗡𝗼𝘄. We glorify productivity–work, achieve, produce, get ahead while you can. The constant race for 𝗡𝗼𝘄 detaches us from the present. Working in tandem with a capital system, the word 𝙣𝙤𝙬 commands and demands attention. Their relationship works without our acknowledgment–“KITS Perscription Glasses Starting at Only $28 SHOP 𝗡𝗢𝗪” or “(kaileyagoo): bestdressedawardwinner liked your photo. 𝗡𝗼𝘄.” The intimate moments of our attention have become commodities. No longer a fun phone game, because “Apple Macbook Pro/Air/iMac keyboard Shortcut STICKER No-residue clear Vinyl (M1+Intel) is Avabilive 𝗡𝗼𝘄. by @kaileymadethis

“We are the water-treatment plant. We are the land we live on,” - Nato Thompson

From the development of agriculture to manufacturing urban landscapes, we have continuously molded our environments to suit our desires. The ongoing fight between our behaviors and nature's will embodies the blurring of boundaries between the synthetic and the real. Our behaviors and environments are a continuous conversation with each other, we build manufactured and commercialized environments to dominate nature. However, without our meticulous maintenance, nature will always expand–breaking away from the constraints we place on the space. The infinite exchange between us and nature molds our land to be an evergrowing conversation and dialogue about our behaviors.

Why do we desire to dominate and control? The demand to manipulate the environment to fit our needs creates an intimate relationship between our behaviors and the natural space. The images materialize into a singular space, always growing and taking shape into something new. The images, as a whole, reflect the active conversation between our interactions and exchange with our surrounding environment. by @kaileymadethis

“Perhaps the bones refuse to renter the world of relatives, family, and property, the world of name and measure, in which skulls are forced to speak of race and rank instead of love and decomposition. Why should they want to reenter an order that sustained and strengthened itself over their dead bodies? Who had to execute them in the first place to keep the realm of belonging, faith, and knowledge intact? Why should they want to return from the world of naked matter in which they freely mix with the dust of the universe?”

From The Wretched of the Screen Hito Steyerl

Working in conversation with an excerpt from The Wretched of the Screen by Hito Steyerl, I navigate the tension between our world and systems of control. Steryerl is questioning the authoritative structures within the mundane and our allowance to be regulated. Visualizing Steyerl’s excerpt, I construct an interactive experience to envision the surrendering of our world’s frameworks.

My Holy Bible

“Perhaps the bones refuse to renter the world of relatives, family, and property, the world of name and measure, in which skulls are forced to speak of race and rank instead of love and decomposition. Why should they want to reenter an order that sustained and strengthened itself over their dead bodies? Who had to execute them in the first place to keep the realm of belonging, faith, and knowledge intact? Why should they want to return from the world of naked matter in which they freely mix with the dust of the universe?”

Working in response to an excerpt from The Wretched of the Screen by Hito Steyerl, I navigate the death of self through systems of control. The Bible and other religious texts are granted authority, but at what cost? Printing Steyerl’s excerpt within the Bible alongside imagery from a Catholic Filipino coloring book, I am giving two systems of control the ability to work in harmony. by @kaileymadethis
