ይስከን: Yeskèn: Coffee Ceremony Tomorrow, Saturday, October 3 | 2–4 pm Kala Gallery @kalagallery_berkeley Join us tomorrow for a special presentation of Ainslee Alem Robson’s (@ahhslay) practice, taking place within her installation ይስከን: Yeskèn: Unsettled Grounds, currently on view as part of the exhibition What We Hold. In Amharic, “yeskèn” refers to the time it takes for coffee grounds to settle at the bottom of the jebena, the clay pot used in the traditional Ethiopian coffee ceremony. The grounds must settle naturally - the time cannot be rushed. This moment of waiting becomes an invitation to pause, gather, and reflect. Through the coffee ceremony, Ainslee considers coffee, food, immigrant communities, and community elders as vessels of intergenerational memory - living, unconventional archives that carry histories, stories, and cultural knowledge across generations. Join us for an afternoon of coffee, conversation, and reflection! Saturday, October 3, 2–4 pm Kala Gallery, 2990 San Pablo Ave, Berkeley Space is limited. Please RSVP. The Reception at Cafe Colucci @cafecolucci, 4-6pm 🔗 RSVP via the link in our bio. Special thanks to the supporters of Kala’s Fellowship Program, including the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts @warholfoundation, The Phyllis C. Wattis Foundation @wattisfoundation, Meyer Sound @meyersoundlabs, Cafe Colucci and many generous individual donors. by @kalagallery_berkeley

We’re thrilled to share that Kala is a recipient of the Further Triennial Community Impact Fund (CIF) Grant! The CIF provides support to culturally-rooted non-profit arts organizations across the Greater Bay Area to participate in the inaugural edition of Further Triennial. As part of the inaugural Further Triennial, Kala will present Among Our Own, co-curated by Dorothy Moss, Director of the Hung Liu Estate, and Mayumi Hamanaka, Kala’s Co-Executive Director. Among Our Own features works from the collection that Hung Liu and Jeff Kelley built together over their lifetimes, a deeply personal archive shaped through friendships, exchanges, gifts, mentorship, and shared experiences within artistic communities. Rather than a formal collection, it reflects a life lived in connection with artists and creative communities. Kala is honored to participate in the first edition of Further Triennial: Around Here, taking place March 10–June 10, 2027, alongside nearly 100 arts organizations across the Greater Bay Area celebrating the vibrant creative life of Northern California. Thank you to Further Triennial @furthertriennial for this incredible opportunity. #KalaArtInstitute #FurtherTriennial #AroundHere #BayAreaArts #HungLiu #JeffKelley #ContemporaryArt #NorthernCaliforniaArts #ArtsCommunity #Kala by @kalagallery_berkeley
