When I don’t feel like training, I remind myself -

Being able to CHOOSE train, to run, to hurt, it’s all a privilege.

Adults and children battling cancer, don’t get to prepare for their diagnosis. They don’t get to train. They don’t choose.

Bret didn’t get to choose.

By absolutely no means am I attempting to compare running a stupid half marathon to battling cancer. What I mean to convey, is that any time I’m feeling like this is hard, thinking of the things in this life that are actually hard, puts it all into perspective REALLY quick.

This is a f*cking luxury.

I GET to do this for Bret and the thousands of people who are, and who will, battle blood cancer.

For two years, I captured milestone after milestone, and loads of memories in between, for Bret and Stephen. What a gift it was to bear witness to their deep love for their son and for each other. So when I made plans to go to New York to be a part of Bret’s book launch, I knew that he would want me capturing every moment, just like always.

It’s been six months, but still somehow, before posting these pictures, I went to share them on iMessage and typed in your name. This is the first real post about you that I’ve managed since you passed and it really sucks and really hurts and it’s as hard to do as I knew it would be.

It feels impossible, and sitting in the reality is pure agony. I miss you every single day, but because we had moved apart before your diagnosis, somehow most days the missing feels like a long distance friendship. Temporary.

But days like today, when reality settles in, and I know I will never hug you again or laugh with you or have the privilege to receive your incredibly wise advice, I feel a sadness that is so deep and painful.

The words come easy when you win.
Not so much when you lose.

Instead of words, ALL THE FEELS.
Layers of emotions to process now it’s all over

True champions don’t skip over this hard part.

You sit with it like you would any trophy. 🏆

Because when you commit to greatness, there is no guarantee of glory.

But with a true champion, there is guarantee of growth….

This year: No 3-peat of the million dollar prize.

Yet, there was a richness to this experience that no amount of money can manufacture.
