My latest project, 5 years in the making, 2 years in full production, created with my good friend Leanne Wright @bshmntgrl .

Charles Stepney -
The Black Gold Of The Sun

The radio documentary on the producer, arranger and composer who masterminded some of the most progressive blues, jazz and soul from the 60’s and 70’s.

Charles Stepney was the key man in the heyday of Chess Records and responsible for a phenomenal body of work between the 60’s and 70’s. During that time he collaborated - and inspired - everyone from jazz giants Eddie Harris and Ramsey Lewis to Minnie Riperton, The Dells, Earth Wind & Fire and Terry Callier. He even helped to resuscitate the careers of Muddy Waters and Howlin Wolf.

Artists, critics and collectors often mention him in the same breath as Quincy Jones and George Martin.

Charles Stepney passed away suddenly at 45 years old.

Leanne and I share a very personal portrait of the man behind the music with the help of family, friends and close collaborators.

Featuring:
@gillespeterson @patrickforge @marc4hero @louievega @2000black Eibur Stepney, @stepneysisters @larrydunnmusic @earthwindandfire Marshall Chess, Ramsey Lewis, Shirley Wahls.

Our radio documentary will be launched on Tuesday 26th March 2019 (Charles Stepney’s Birthday) on @worldwide.fm from 1-4pm (GMT) with some very special guests.

Big shouts to everyone involved in making this happen; @amarofpatel for writing and co-producing and @jazzthemix for engineering and mastering. by @kambhogal_
