before i make any other @weoutherefest recaps, i have to take a moment - a full cycle moment - & appreciate just what went down in Dorset last night.

six years ago @kambhogal_ & i aired a documentary that we produced on the genius that is @charlesstepney on @worldwide.fm (w/ esteemed guests @marc4hero @patrickforge & @amarofpatel who helped co-produce & w/ a live performance from @gyallikeclee !)

through the process we were fortunate enough to interview & get to know the incredible @stepneysisters & have marvelled at their love & determination to bring this project together.

i met them for the first time in person backstage last night moments before the performance - it felt like a sort of homecoming 💗

the performance…

when the first few bars of Les Fleur floated out over us, the wave of the crescendo lifted us all up together - it was pure magic ✨

absolutely the highlight of the entire weekend. i can only imagine what it must have felt like for the 3 sisters to have seen & heard us all singing along…

i had a secret wish to hear Deniece Williams “Free” - i found out later it was on the set list for the encore w/ Black Gold but had to be cut because of timing but that didn’t take away from it being one of the best live experiences i’ve had at WOH

what a wonderful achievement - deftly conducted by @juniuspaulmusic & massive respect to all of the musicians & singers including Charles Stepney’s own granddaughter who sang Marlena Shaw’s “Woman of the Ghetto” (those fiddles!!)

@stepneysisters & all involved- what a magnificent tribute - you sure did your father proud x

got to shout out @intlanthem & of course the one man who is almost single handedly responsible for helping to keep his music (& the legacies of so many others) alive for future generations of music lovers , @gillespeterson 🙏🏼💜

go & familiarise yourself with Stepney’s catalogue - it will blow your mind the songs he’s had his hand in arranging/producing/playing on.
