DJ Lemonka sits down with Kamza, @kamombatha_ one-third of the influential South African production trio I.V. League, for a deep dive into creativity, legacy, and the systems that shaped SA hip hop.

In this week’s episode of 3rd Element of Hip Hop, DJ Lemonka sits down with Kamza, one-third of the influential South African production trio I.V. League, for a deep dive into creativity, legacy, and the systems that shaped SA hip hop.

This conversation traces Kamza’s journey from childhood creativity and early broadcasting, through the groundbreaking era of The Essence on 5FM, to the rise of I.V. League as one of the most respected production collectives in the country.

Kamza reflects honestly on the responsibility of taste-making, the pressure of maintaining standards, and why pushing artists to be better was never about ego, but about respect for the culture.

Topics covered include:
- Early exposure to media, live TV, and creative discipline
- The philosophy behind The Essence and taste-making in SA hip hop
- Why not everything deserved airtime, and the backlash that followed
- The formation and mindset of I.V. League
- Working with artists like ProKid, Khuli Chana, AKA, Tuks, and more
- Sampling culture, copyright realities, and learning “by doing”
- Why EPs, mixtapes, and albums should be treated with equal seriousness
- The importance of discomfort, critique, and honest collaboration
- Why hip hop needs standards, not shortcuts
- Legacy, contribution, and why flowers matter more from the people than the industry

This episode is a masterclass in craft, integrity, and cultural responsibility, essential viewing for producers, artists, and anyone serious about the long game in music.
