DJ Lemonka sits down with Kamza, @kamombatha_ one-third of the influential South African production trio I.V. League, for a deep dive into creativity, legacy, and the systems that shaped SA hip hop.

In this week’s episode of 3rd Element of Hip Hop, DJ Lemonka sits down with Kamza, one-third of the influential South African production trio I.V. League, for a deep dive into creativity, legacy, and the systems that shaped SA hip hop.

This conversation traces Kamza’s journey from childhood creativity and early broadcasting, through the groundbreaking era of The Essence on 5FM, to the rise of I.V. League as one of the most respected production collectives in the country.

Kamza reflects honestly on the responsibility of taste-making, the pressure of maintaining standards, and why pushing artists to be better was never about ego, but about respect for the culture.

Topics covered include:
- Early exposure to media, live TV, and creative discipline
- The philosophy behind The Essence and taste-making in SA hip hop
- Why not everything deserved airtime, and the backlash that followed
- The formation and mindset of I.V. League
- Working with artists like ProKid, Khuli Chana, AKA, Tuks, and more
- Sampling culture, copyright realities, and learning “by doing”
- Why EPs, mixtapes, and albums should be treated with equal seriousness
- The importance of discomfort, critique, and honest collaboration
- Why hip hop needs standards, not shortcuts
- Legacy, contribution, and why flowers matter more from the people than the industry

This episode is a masterclass in craft, integrity, and cultural responsibility, essential viewing for producers, artists, and anyone serious about the long game in music.

Subscribe for more conversations unpacking South African hip hop from the inside out.

We came out to support @luke_gabriel1899 at @kasiflare Grand Finals at @rage_expo today! 😤 He battled through a tough 32-player knockout bracket to reach the Semi-Finals, securing a solid 4th place finish. We are incredibly proud of the performance. Keep pushing, Luke! ⚽️🏟️🎮 ivsyongaming.com #eSports #EAFC #IvysonGamingLeagueSeason4

Wow, how to summarize an event that formed such a huge part of who I am today? It all started in 2006. That year, "fatal1ty" attended @rage_expo. For a 16 year old kid, realizing this dude played games for a living was truly mindblowing. On my return home, my mind was set. I wanted to be a pro-gamer.

1: In 2008, I made my return to rAge to compete in the Telkom Do Gaming Championships in Call of Duty 4. I played for a clan (yes, we called them clans back then 🤣)

2: In 2009, I attended rAge with my same clan to compete in the biggest CoD4 tournament yet. Team "Brazen" won that year and joined Bravado Gaming. I knew that was the team I HAD to play for!

3: In 2010, the legend @quickshotofficial hosted the CoD tournie and secured the attendance of @fnatic LEGENDS, including KyoChi.

4: 2011, a dream comes true. I joined @bravadogaming. I look back, and this was probably my best performance on LAN. I played my face off to prove I was worthy of my spot in that squad.

5: Winner Winner Baby, Bravado are your 2012 Call of Duty 4 champions!! My proudest moment in my competitive gaming career. I forced my lady to come and watch. Thankfully, we won, or i might not be married today 🤣

6: 2013, my final year competing. In that time of my life, attending rAge and being together with my brothers at Bravado Gaming was truly the highlight of every year.

7: Fast forward to 2016. I attended rAge as a guest speaker. Focusing on the topic of the growth of competitive gaming and how my company (@orenaonline) was trying to elevate the industry in South Africa.

8: In 2018, I hosted my own tournament at rAge, over a decade after attending my first event as a competitor! The lady in PIC 5 is now my wife, and she is helping me admin my PUBG tournament 😅.

9: Who would have thought. In 2019, I would attend rAge as the Head of the @redbullza Gaming Department, facilitating the partnership between both brands.

10: A first-time occasion in 2023! Africas first Gaming Athlete @yvng_savage_04_official welcomed @mayichiii to the Red Bull family on the rAge main stage!

11: That's me today, reminding you to buy your rAge Expo 2025 tickets!! (www.rageexpo.co.za)

The Creator Challenge was wild! @king.oumar came in talking big, while @beamerboyytv stayed calm and confident 👀

But Beamerboy flipped the script — winning 5–0 in FC25 and 2–1 in Brawlhalla, taking the series 2–0 overall 🏆 No need for Fall Guys this time 😅
