일본 도쿄를 기반으로 활동하는 메이크업 아티스트 카나코는 최근 패션계가 주목하는 ‘어글리 뷰티(Ugly Beauty)’의 대표적인 인물이다. 눈썹을 지우거나, 얼굴에 보석을 붙이고, 일부러 불완전함을 강조하는 그의 메이크업은 전통적인 미의 기준과는 거리가 멀다. 하지만 바로 그 낯설고 기이한 요소들이 새로운 아름다움으로 받아들여지고 있는 것.

카나코는 일본의 갸루, 비주얼계, 하라주쿠 스트리트 문화 등에서 영감을 받아 자신만의 언어를 만들어왔다. 그는 아름다움이란 완벽한 얼굴이 아닌 개성과 사랑, 그리고 태도에서 비롯된다고 말한다. 모두가 더 예뻐지기 위해 노력하는 시대, 카나코의 작업은 오히려 “아름다움이란 무엇인가”라는 질문을 던지고 있다.

Tokyo-based makeup artist Kanako has become one of the leading figures behind the rise of “Ugly Beauty,” a movement that embraces shaved brows, exaggerated details, gems, imperfections and unconventional aesthetics. Rather than following traditional beauty standards, her work celebrates individuality and self-expression.

Drawing inspiration from Japanese subcultures such as Gyaru, Visual Kei and Harajuku street culture, Kanako challenges the idea that beauty must be polished or perfect. In a fashion landscape increasingly drawn to the strange and unexpected, her work asks a simple question: what if beauty was never meant to fit the rules in the first place?

Kanako is a Tokyo makeup artist that PAP Beauty calls a leading face of "ugly beauty": makeup built from gyaru, visual kei and Harajuku street culture, where beauty comes from individuality, love and attitude, not a perfect face.
