Erased brows, star grillz, gems on the face. 💎 Kanako is a Tokyo makeup artist that PAP Beauty calls a leading face of "ugly beauty": makeup built from gyaru, visual kei and Harajuku street culture, where beauty comes from individuality, love and attitude, not a perfect face. Lately: star grillz with @aloalogrillz for @4omomo, the Matières Fécales FW25 show at Dover Street Market Ginza, and Sabukaru Issue 02. Pretty or ugly: who decides? 📸 @kanako_makeup · grillz @aloalogrillz on @4omomo · @matieresfecalesparis FW25 × @doverstreetmarketginza · @sabukaru.online Issue 02, photo Madeleine Ray @spotles.minds, talent @minamo_j · via @papbeauty_ #uglybeauty #kanakomakeup #tokyomakeup #avantgardemakeup #matieresfecales #wattson

Welcome to our new series where I, Fenella (creator of agit_) interview makeup artists whilst they give me a makeover. You can watch the full video via the link in our bio. In this video, I had the pleasure of having my makeup done by the incredibly talented Kanako @kanako_makeup whilst I interviewed her. As you will see from the clips and photos of Kanako’s work, she is an overwhlemingly talented makeup artist who specialises in the avant-garde, whilst she also has a level of expertise to create makeup to suit any brief. I hope you enjoy watching her speak about her craft as much as I enjoyed interviewing her! The clips and photos feature makeup created by Kanako, courtesy of her Instagram (which you must follow!) A couple of clips and photos are from my travels in Japan. This was filmed in May in Tokyo when I was visiting Japan from London. Who would you like me to interview next on this series? FOR MORE ARTICLES | @pap_magazine Tokyo-based makeup artist Kanako has become one of the leading figures behind the rise of “Ugly Beauty,” a movement that embraces shaved brows, exaggerated details, gems, imperfections and unconventional aesthetics. Rather than following traditional beauty standards, her work celebrates individuality and self-expression. Drawing inspiration from Japanese subcultures such as Gyaru, Visual Kei and Harajuku street culture, Kanako challenges the idea that beauty must be polished or perfect. In a fashion landscape increasingly drawn to the strange and unexpected, her work asks a simple question: what if beauty was never meant to fit the rules in the first place? 📸 @kanako_makeup

the sabukaru Guide to Fukuoka: With over 42 million international visitors a year, Japan is currently on heavy rotation between your best friend’s friend, your grandma, and their auntie. Yet while the country sits stronger than ever in the global travel spotlight, most visitors still move through the same handful of cities, leaving countless places, stories, and local scenes overlooked. One city that continues to stand out to the sabukaru team is Fukuoka. We would describe it as the perfect harmony between slow and fast pace, local experiences, honest culture, incredible food, beaches, and a new generation of creatives quietly shaping their own corners of the city. Compared to Tokyo or Osaka, things feel more grounded here. More walkable. More human and less humans at the same time. To build the best guide to Fukuoka, we first needed to find a base for ourselves. That’s why we teamed up with BASE LAYER HOTEL FUKUOKA, a newly opened culture-focused hotel and lifestyle hub that quickly became the perfect starting point for us to explore deeper into the city and everything around it. Instead of simply listing one spot after another, the sabukaru team reached out directly to local people shaping the city from within. From vinyl store owners to designers, chefs, cafés, bars, and other creative voices that make Fukuoka what it is today. Beyond locations, we wanted to present a feeling for the city itself, a vibe that slowly unfolds while walking through Fukuoka and meeting its people. Welcome to sabukaru’s guide to Fukuoka. For the full location guide, check the link in bio.

Colour breaks through with purpose. Neons, cherries, and cobalt tones slice across natural bases in deliberate streaks and panels, disrupting softness with saturated intent. Pigment sits boldly within the structure - less highlight, more statement - turning hair into something graphic, almost textile. The result is sharp, subversive, and impossible to blend away.
