Did you know that the iconic windmill in Kaniva isn't just a charming landmark? It holds a fascinating tale that goes back to the 1850s! 🕰️

Merino sheep were bred and run in the Kaniva District by squatters from the 1850s and 1860s. When the area was thrown open to selectors from 1875 onwards, sheep and cattle were run as the land was cleared, but were limited to where water was available. 🐏🐄

From around 1890 onwards the township sprung up, largely thanks to Fry's flour mill. However it was the windmill that provided a reliable water source for stock, pumping water from a bore that has been dug deep enough to access an underground aquifer. 🏞️💧

Nowadays, many farms have replaced windmills with solar pumps and the area is still dependant on underground water for urban and agricultural water supply, the main resource being the Tertiary Limestone Aquifer. 🌍⚙️

The windmill in Kaniva is ornamental only. Kaniva's gardens are all watered using the underground water and the Kaniva Wetlands fills from storm-water run off.

🧵 The Kaniva Shire Hall has been a hive of activity today as the amazing Windmill Stitchers of Kaniva put the finishing touches on their 12th Biennial Exhibition.

Held just once every two years, this is a chance to see an incredible display of quilting talent, and to step inside our beautiful Shire Hall, a fitting setting for such a wonderful exhibition.

Pictured are just some of the charity quilts the group has made. These will be donated to Flinders Kids through Quilters SA in Adelaide, helping bring comfort to sick children. As a border community, the group also donates quilts the following year to the Very Snuggly Quilt program at the Royal Children’s Hospital. There’s a lot of heart stitched into every one.

Make a day of it in Kaniva this Saturday! Along with the Quilt Show, several local businesses will be open Saturday morning from 10am to 12.30pm, including Seven & Sage, Lane 36 and Kaniva Floor & Decor. The Kaniva Op Shop is open 10am–2pm, and you can also visit the Puppet Shop, Little Desert Quilts, Windmill Café and Kaniva Bakery throughout the weekend, plus others..

🎃 Telopea Downs Dinner Dance returns for its 54th year!

A long-standing community tradition is getting a Halloween makeover, with the Telopea Downs 54th Annual Dinner Dance set to bring people together for a night of food, music and dancing on Saturday 7 November.

This year’s Halloween theme invites everyone to dress up, gather their friends and enjoy an evening with live music from The Austins.

Predinner drinks and nibbles begin at 7pm, followed by the main course and dessert from 7.30pm. Bring your own drinks and some cash for the raffle!

Tickets are $50 per person when prepaid or $60 on the night. You can book a table with friends or come along and join others - everyone is welcome.

Bookings and payment are required by Sunday 1 November to help organisers plan catering.

🐾 If you were in town yesterday, you may have noticed a few extra four-legged friends around Kaniva LINK Neighbourhood House. And there was a good reason as Dr Georgie was in town for Vet Clinic! 🐶🐱

For anyone who doesn't know, Bordertown Veterinary Clinic operate a veterinary clinic at LINK Neighbourhood House, making it much easier for local pet owners to access basic veterinary care right here is Kaniva.

The Kaniva clinic started in May 2021, when residents couldn't cross the border, so what began as a practical solution has continued ever since. It has become a valued local service and is incredibly popular thanks to word of mouth.

The clinic provides care for more straightforward veterinary needs, including vaccinations, microchipping, ear and eye checks, itchy skin and other basic care. 💉

And it’s not just Kaniva residents using the service, with many Victorian pet owners coming from further afield too.

Dr Georgie is local to Kaniva and has been part of the Bordertown Veterinary Clinic team since 2018.

There’s just one week left of the school holidays, and there’s plenty happening around Kaniva and the district to make the most of it.

Here are a few highlights from the calendar:

THURSDAY 1 OCTOBER
🖼️ 11am – Wiregrass Heritage Trail Walking Tour
Discover the stories, characters and humour behind Percy Leason’s famous Wiregrass cartoons on a free guided walk through Kaniva’s main street.

🌿 11.30am – Kaniva Wetlands Play Day
Join characters from Wombat Stew on a quest to help Dingo create the ultimate Wombat Stew! A free pop-up playgroup at the Kaniva Wetlands & Fauna Park, with stories, activities and outdoor fun for children and their families.

🍽️ 11am – Seniors Day Out
A day of good food, company and information about WWHS Social Support in Kaniva. $12 per person. Bookings essential.

FRIDAY 2 OCTOBER
🌷 10.15am – Garden Group
Enjoy a spring garden visit to Heather Wallis’ garden, with morning tea and gardening tips. Free, but bookings are essential.

SATURDAY 3 OCTOBER
🔥 Kaniva Fire Brigade Group Exercise
A major training and preparedness exercise involving Kaniva’s trucks and volunteers.

🐴 Goroke Show
A full day of country show fun including horses, Stockman’s Challenge, sheep races, shearing, kids’ activities, live music, food and plenty more.

🛍️ Nhill Town Garage Sale – 9am–4pm
A town-wide garage sale with bargains, market stalls, BBQs, a furniture sale and other first-of-the-month activities.

🌸 Ladies Spring Fling – 5pm
Dress to impress for an evening of live music, drinks, nibbles, games and raffles at the Kaniva Community Hub. $50, with proceeds going to Kaniva Kindergarten.
