Persephone in a way feels like a the twin to Ophelia. They began during the same difficult winter, with the same pencil and the same need to make something when I didn’t really know what else to do with everything I was feeling.

But where Ophelia went beneath the water, Persephone went into the forest. The mythology of Persephone has always fascinated me because hers is a story of descent and return, ebb and flow. She moves between two worlds, one of darkness and one of light, winter and spring, loss and renewal. She descends into the Underworld, but that is not where her story ends. She returns.

For me, she is caught in a moment of uncertainty: is she taking her heart out, or is she putting it back in? Either way, it is larger than it should be.

That oversized heart feels important to me. It is a reminder that I lead with my heart. That I feel deeply, love deeply, and continue to choose love even when it makes me vulnerable.

Persephone carries so many dualities within her…life and death, darkness and renewal, leaving and returning, becoming and beginning again. She is both the person who descends and the person who finds her way back. I see something of myself in that transformation.

After a difficult winter, these drawings became a way of moving through what I had been avoiding. Through growth, change, and time. A chrysalis. A cocoon. Coming out on the other side, not unchanged, but more fully myself. And honestly love is the only answer I know.

I needed some space from this one before I could come back to it. And when I finally did, I realized I wasn’t just finishing the drawing, I was working through a little bit of myself too. Drawing is therapy.

This past winter was difficult. During one of the worst snowstorms in February, I was home alone with my dogs. My heat broke twice, my pipes froze twice, and I was stressed, lonely, and overwhelmed in one of the worst snowstorms we’ve had. I started a series of pencil drawings during those days, Simple, void of color, matching my mood and the landscape, but I never finished them.

Partly because life got busy again, and partly because looking at them brought me right back to a time and feeling I wasn’t ready to revisit.

Months later, Paton Miller invited me to be part of East End Collected 9 at Southampton Arts Center. It was exactly the push I needed to finish the drawings. The two drawings are twins of sorts, one on land and one in the sea. This one is Ophelia.

I was drawn to that space between being overwhelmed and finding stillness. Is she sinking? Floating? Dreaming? Surrendering? Or can she simply be still?

Finishing her months later meant returning to those February feelings, but this time I could move through them instead of getting stuck there. Sometimes artwork needs to sit unfinished until you’re ready to meet it again. Maybe feelings do too. Drawing really is a great therapist.

⚓️ NEW DATES. SAME MARITIME SPIRIT. ⚓️

The 36th Annual Greenport Maritime Festival is officially setting a new course for October 16–18, 2026.

With a Nor’Easter forecast to impact the East End during our originally scheduled September weekend, the Greenport Business Owners Alliance, Village of Greenport, Southold Town Police Department and festival partners have made the decision to postpone the festival and keep our full three-day celebration together.

SAVE THE NEW DATES:
⚓️ LAND & SEA GALA
Friday, October 16

⚓️ 36TH ANNUAL GREENPORT MARITIME FESTIVAL
Saturday & Sunday, October 17–18

Maritime has always been about our relationship with the water, and part of that is respecting the conditions around us. Making this decision now gives our residents, businesses, vendors, sponsors, volunteers, visitors and participating organizations time to adjust while allowing us to preserve the full festival weekend.

If you already have tickets to the Land & Sea Gala, no action is needed. Your tickets will automatically transfer to the new date. Ticket holders and sponsors will also receive a separate email with additional information.

And now, we have THREE MORE WEEKS TO GET ON BOARD!

We’ll be using this extra time to reconfirm programming, share more stories from the incredible people and organizations behind Maritime, and welcome additional businesses, sponsors, vendors, volunteers and community partners as space allows.

For more than 35 years, Maritime has celebrated Greenport’s connection to the sea, our working waterfront, local businesses and the people who make this Village so special.

This festival belongs to Greenport, and bringing it to life takes Greenport.

Same Festival. New Weekend.
OCTOBER 16–18, 2026.

Please help us spread the word, save the new dates and get ready for a beautiful fall weekend on the waterfront.

More schedule updates coming soon. ⚓️ by @karabellaa

KARA HOBLIN
Full Moon at Selkie Rock
Acrylic on vintage mirror/glass
Sold
🔴

Inspired by the folklore of the selkie, mythical beings who live as seals in the sea but can shed their skins to take human form on land, Selkie Rock explores the longing to move between two worlds and the pull to return home.

The piece merges the selkie legend with imagery of the mermaid, creating a figure caught somewhere between woman, sea creature, myth, and memory. Painted onto a vintage mirror, she appears among crashing waves and rocky shores, as though caught in a reflection between land and water. The mirror becomes another kind of threshold, a surface between what is real and what is imagined, reflecting the viewer back into the story.

Selkie Rock is about transformation, longing, belonging, and the wild part of ourselves that is always searching for its way back to the sea.

Join us for the closing reception of Kara Hoblin’s solo exhibition, Notes from a Gemini Rising, on Sunday August 30th from 2–4 PM, and revisit one of her longest-running personal projects: The Chalk Art of Letting Go.

Started in 2016 (first at Port of Egypt, now Hinkley’s), The Chalk Art of Letting Go grew out of a period of personal loss, heartache, and a near-death experience. Chalk, already Kara’s medium of choice, became a tool for moving through life’s difficulties and learning to embrace the beauty and necessity of letting go.

What began as something deeply personal became something Kara wanted to share with her community. For nearly a decade, Kara has created intricate chalk works and then invited the community to help wash them away im various places. It is a shared ritual about impermanence, change, release, and making room for whatever comes next. Through the act of erasing the artwork together, she hopes to create space for others to release whatever they may be carrying, too.

For the closing of Notes from a Gemini Rising, we’ll erase the chalkboard Kara created live during the Greenport Cherry Blossom Festival. Grab a spray bottle or sponge, make a mark, wash one away, and help us send this piece, and this chapter, into its next life.

A fitting ending for a show about collecting, observing, remembering, changing, and finding meaning in the things we encounter along the way.

✨Notes from a Gemini Rising ✨
A solo exhibition by Kara Hoblin (@karabellaa)

KARA HOBLIN
Wildflower Whale
Acrylic on Wooden Panel
Available
DM for more info

Floral whales have become a recurring part of Kara Hoblin’s work, appearing in paintings and murals across the East End of Long Island and beyond. Wildflower Whale takes a deeper, more delicate approach, filling the body of a large humpback with tiny wildflowers and lush greenery

Part wild meadow, part of our ocean, the whale becomes its own living landscape...a place where the natural worlds above and below the water meet.

The piece is a reminder that land and sea are never truly separate. Everything in nature moves in cycles: growing, changing, returning, and beginning again. What happens along our shores reaches the water, and what happens beneath the waves eventually finds its way back to land.

Wildflower Whale carries that connection within her, a small, wild garden and a reminder that everything living is part of the same cycle.
