My weird animated theatrical rap short film Circus Freestyle was selected to be screened at the @outlinefestival in Moscow, which is happening right now! Huge props to German Jorge @ger3x5 who worked on the stunning animation, which is what this screen exhibition is focused on. This summer, I wrote music for a killer short film “Locally Sourced”, directed by @itszaarinb, that premiered at the Vancouver Asian Film Festival @vaffvancouver. In between a busy schedule of Toronto Fringe Festival, other production work and summer travels, I had about 4 days - yep, 4 - to write, record and mix an original score. Oh, and a whole end credits song in a classic / punk rock style titled “Blood on your Cardigan”. Whan an absolute blast!The short is a clever dark satire about a politically correct, virtue signaling, vampire couple. A year of musical offerings to the machine. This year I decided to lean into using Instagram as a place to share more of me, to connect with more artists & producers, to exercise the muscle of finishing & sharing things quickly, and to pursue the overlap of my weird sound with universal appeal. And even though it can be an icky world with a lot of pressure to conform and appease the algorithm, in the midst of real world projects, I’m grateful for everyone who’s tuned in. LOL I came up with this in a fever dream one day after someone told me there was a call to submit jingles for the new free childcare program in NYC. Tried to capture the DNA of New York in musical styles, pulling from a decade of lived experience:A car blasting Puerto Rican trap in West Harlem;A Gospel church in Queens;Reggaeton from a kids bday party at Riverside Park;Broadway musicals; andThat Upper West cinematic orchestral sound you hear in old noir gangster films or well, Bernstein. Went to @loop_sessions for the first time and @kadhjabonet was the guest. I’ve been inspired by her for a while, especially because of how she brings together neo-soul & film influences. She selected some wild samples including axel F, Herbie Hancock and a trombone concerto. I sampled the concerto and made this beat in a couple hours. What a dope, talented & down-to-earth producer community, so glad I heard about this (thanks @nolypants!).
