My studio needs a bit of a tidy up and now the rains have arrived I’ll also be putting in lots of those De-humidifier tubs throughout, to protect my canvases and materials. Never having had a fully timbered structure to work in before, I hadn’t appreciated that condensation could become a possible issue. Yet even though it is fully insulated and has double glazing it does still occur. A small price to pay for a great working space! As usual, the application of this lovely Liquitex (undiluted)product went smoothly and uneventfully, brushed over this acrylic painted abstract (‘Restless Stillness 1’) on card, which had been glued with PVA to conservation board. The good news is that what happened next, I was able to fix - but it first took me by surprise! 😳 You see, in the past I’ve only ever before used spray varnish on paintings on card and this time using a water based acrylic varnish revealed that the uneven application of PVA glue beneath, had created an uneven tension during drying - which resulted in some small areas of bubbling on the painting! Oh no… ! HOWEVER, if this ever happens to you, this is what you can do to fix it:
Lay a thin untextured cloth (or baking paper) over the fully dried varnished painting, put your iron on a ‘silk’ low setting and which must NOT have the steam setting operating. Then iron over the cloth in smooth circular movements. Once bubbles ease and smooth out, place the painting - whilst still warm - protected by the cloth or baking paper, and weighted down by heavy books/objects for a couple of hours. Then remove it all to see results (repeat process if required).
Next step: A sigh of relief that all is good again and framing can proceed!
These small works will be informing some larger pieces which will be on stretched linen or canvas - definitely my preferred substrate! If you’d like to see a selection of my abstract paintings please tap on the link to my website in the Bio above, where you can also join my mailing list for occasional Newsletters on my events and studio happenings. 😊 If you’d like more information on the lovely small painting shown (which is one of a series of four) please Direct Message me. #studiowork #abstractlandscape #abstractpaintings by @karen_grimstead

I’m looking forward to some more flying this Spring/Summer with my darling husband, Bob! The WA coastline is very beautiful with its Turquoise, pristine waters (we may even see some Whales 😀) and vast, clean beaches of silvery sand, stretching for miles. The air is clear and unpolluted, unlike the skies in some other parts of the world, so visibility for flying around Perth and my favourite region, the South West, is just perfect. Apart from the flying being a lovely experience in itself, the aerial perspective enables me to take some interesting photos and importantly, register emotional impressions of the landscape I’m observing, which later informs my abstract art. If you want to learn a little more about me, and see a selection of my original contemporary, abstract paintings, just tap on the link to my website in the bio above. #abstractartist #flyingforfun #paintinginspiration by @karen_grimstead

I was listening to this sublimely beautiful music whilst painting this original artwork. The music and the painting evoke the feelings of the infinite possibilities ahead, as we calmly gaze towards a distant, dreamy horizon. The ‘Beyondness of Dreams’ is one of my favourite abstract landscape paintings. The atmospheric composition is meaningful, and the softly blended colour palette and subtle application became my emotional response to this, and the ethereal music by Composer John Barry, that I was immersed in, in my studio. This contemporary artwork is available to purchase ($2,300) it is professionally framed in a neutral box frame.
I am honoured to have two of my abstract paintings (including this one) accepted in the imminent 51st ARMY ART SHOW, which is open to visitors on: Saturday 17th October 10-5pm AND Sunday 18th October 10-2pm.
Located at: The Army Defence Base, Leeuwin Barracks, The Historic Drill Hall, Riverside Drive, East Fremantle, Western Australia.
This large art exhibition of purchasable art by local WA artists is not one to be missed, and you can combine your visit with enjoying beautiful views of the Swan River foreshore from the many cafés nearby. #abstractartist #abstractpainting #artforsalebyartists #armyartwa by @karen_grimstead
