Soft mauve orchids arc in a steady, elegant line against a warm, rose-tinted ground. I was drawn to that curved rhythm; it creates an elegant display. Translucent petals catch cool highlights and faint veins, while the darker stems give a calm vertical counterpoint. I wanted a piece that feels poised and quietly present, something simple that holds your attention without shouting. #balletofpink #karenihirsch #orchids #botanic by @karenihirsch

I wanted something straightforward: a rose-colored bloom from New Zealand. The petals fold into a tight, luminous center while glossy green leaves form a dark, textured backdrop. A few unopened buds at the edge add quiet balance. The color is confident, vivid magenta against cool verdant tones, and up close you can follow the layered edges while stepping back the shape reads simple and refined. What do you notice first, the center or the leaves?

I wanted to share this view of Monroe Harbor, just prior to the start of the Chicago to Mackinac sailboat race. There’s a calm, steady energy, with masts punctuating the skyline, a dock angling toward the city, and small groups moving around bright gear. Muted blues and greenish-teals hold the water while cloud banks give the skyline a hush between sun and storm. Details like stacked kayaks, round buoys, and a yellow storage unit add small moments that keep your eye moving without shouting. I like the quiet readiness in the scene, the sense that something is about to begin. What do you notice first? #monroeharborbeforetherace #raetomackinac #sailing #lakemichigan #chicagoskyline by @karenihirsch

La Sagrada Família is the number one tourist attraction in the world according to Travel & Leisure. This magnificent church in Barcelona,Spain, designed by Gaudi, is still under construction after 140 years.

Walking into this architectural masterpiece took my breath away. The light coming from the stained glass windows coupled with the giant pillars representing trees Can only make you look around in awe in this spiritual experience. #lasagradafamilia #barcelona #spanishlandmark #spanishchurch #touristattraction by @karenihirsch

I arranged the composition around blocks of color: sun-warmed ochre, crisp white, and deep green, with a small ceramic tile that reads 124. A terracotta planter on the sill holds a tight cluster of pink blooms and a single red flower, softening the shutter’s straight lines. Weathered hinges, chipped clay, and the stucco’s grain are the small, everyday marks that keep the scene grounded. Light falls evenly, showing surface and shadow without drama. Which detail catches your eye today?

I wanted to share this scene of a mallard gliding across water streaked with orange reflections. The green head and yellow bill stand out against that warm band, and the ripples pull the color into ribboned patterns behind it. I like the quiet forward motion of the bird and the little details, like soft gray flanks, a hint of chestnut, and a curled tail that invite a second look.

Legendary Mike Ditka, Chicago Bears football player and coach of the Chicago Bears Super Bowl championship team passed away today.

I had the fortunate opportunity to photograph Ditka a couple of times. This photo was made in the Bears locker room at Soldier Field during a commercial shoot.

Meet Orchid Number 2. I focused on the small details: white petals dusted with magenta fanning from a vivid throat, the lip curled with yellow and crimson, and a slender green stem that guides the eye across a rose-colored background. The petals have a satiny translucence while the softer blooms recede, giving the piece a quiet, refined presence. It feels like a calm burst of color that would sit nicely beside a reading chair or over a mantel. Where would you hang it?
