It’s a rainy day here in Vancouver and we certainly need the rain this season and, the sound on the roof top is just lovely. A meditative pulse. Perhaps a perfect night to get inside to hear some jazz? There’s LOTS of jazz going on in our city including KP trio tonight at Apollo’s Restaurant where I’ll be singing with Geoff Claridge and with Josh Roberts.
Karin Plato Music
We start at 7:30 PM.

Summer 2026 ~ Faces & Places of summer 2026 …it’s been a strange and challenging summer this year for all the obvious reasons but for other reasons as well. Such is life. Still, there have been wonderful experiences as well and I have much to be thankful for. Counting and relishing the joys of faces and places in my life. I didn’t take so many photos this past while (those memories etched in heart) but I did manage to capture a few of family and of friends and colleagues. Some photos from this year’s Swing West Camp (so fantastic!) @elaineschiman Elaine ♥️absolutely knocked it out of the park singing a stunning version of “Here’s to Life”👌 so great Elaine!! Choir master Brian Tate and his choir wowed us all with some truly uplifting music! My dear friends @guidoheistek and Andrea and Kathy shared some gorgeous harmonies in performance. I had various travels and camping adventures (including bike rides and chess games)with my beloved husband and I was very grateful to get to see my dear Mom and she certainly was surprised and smiling the second she saw G’s face. My two beloved blue-eyed wonders!!
Back home again and last Sunday enjoyed the beautiful music performed by my talented friend @crema_laura ♥️Laura Crema and her stellar band along with the incredible film “Jazz on a Summer’s Day”. Such a great afternoon!!
A few small family get togethers and slow down time. So…now it’s midsummer? Let’s call it that. Time for more bike rides and practising and attempting to go with the flow. Oh and yes…my passion flowers. Ooh la la love my passion flowers. They may each only last ONE day but then…the next day…a new one shows 😍

today he has his birthday
He’ll have cake and eat it too!
May he have luck in what’s ahead
and may good health be in the cards
Today we toast Gorm and his birth
So thankful that he’s here on earth.

Tomorrow afternoon many of us will gather to celebrate the life of dear Paul Norton at the Rogue Folk Club. Paul was adored by everyone who knew him and this will be a way to honour and celebrate his many achievements. Paul’s wife Sue Malcolm has mentioned that there are only a few seats left so if you plan on attending in person you should reserve your seat soon.

Link to reserve seats in comment section.

SMILE...
We’re half way through June and summer days are upon us. Next week I have the pleasure of singing with The Delta Concert Band and the band will present a variety of music from the stage and screen including music of Charlie Chaplin. I’ve been asked to sing the song “Smile” which is not not included in the band instrumentals and I have agreed to do so. I have not sung that song in my own gigs over the years (although I have had several students learn it) because it always affected me deeply and I haven’t trusted myself to get through it. Still... I do love that song and I hope to do a nice job singing and playing it for everyone next Tuesday.

Did you know that Charles Chaplin wrote the music for the song? It was used in his 1936 film “Modern Times” as an instrumental piece. Later, John Turner and Geoffrey Parsons wrote the lyrics and Nat King Cole sang the first version of the song with lyrics. Many other people have recorded that song which suggests that no matter what is going on in life that it may help to smile. I hope that’s the case! Some days that is more difficult than others but then you get to see the beautiful flowers or visit with friends and up comes the smile. Yes!

The show with the Delta Concert Band is Tuesday June 23rd.

After that my next summer gig is Sunday July 5th where I’ll make a return to 2nd Floor Gastown where I’ll be singing with Dave Sikula on guitar and Jake McIntyre- Paul on bass.

have a wonderful summer everyone!

Here's the poster for the Delta Concert Band event on June 23~ @delta_bandbc
I'm very excited about this event where I will be singing with Delta Concert Band conducted by Jim Tempest. The theme for the June 23rd concert is "Music of the Stage and Screen" and I adore each song Jim has asked me to sing with the band. You'll hear music from many familiar stage and film productions and these are truly memorable songs. I am also performing a mini set of songs playing the piano with a couple of the Delta Concert band musicians. A ukulele tune as well? Yes indeed.

Do you have friends or family residing in Delta? Or, do you want to come on a "road trip" to see then band perform? Tuesday June 23rd is the date. taken in North Delta, B.C. by @karinplatomusic

Coming up in June I have the great pleasure of being a vocal guest with The Delta Concert Band conducted by my friend Jim Tempest called "Music of the Stage & Screen" on Tuesday June 23rd. What a program Jim and the band have put together! It has been many years since I have had the opportunity to sing with a band of this nature so needless to say there is extra excitement leading up to this show and I am in plato-prep mode. Thank you Jim for the invitation to sing these great arrangements with your band! I will also be doing a little trio set of tunes to kick off the 2nd half of the show. I'll be playing the piano and for one song I will be playing my uke and I'll be joined by a bassist and drummer from the concert band.

The Delta concert band certainly has a busy spring and summer concert schedule which kicks off tomorrow afternoon. Here below is the info for all of those concerts:

I will be singing at 2nd Floor Gastown this Sunday May 31 with guitarist Dave Sikula and with bassist Jake McIntyre -Paul. I always enjoy singing there and I am certainly delighted about singing with these 2 talented gentlemen.

I don't know if I'll be singing like the Marsh Wren depicted in this photo taken by photographer friend John Whitmore but I'll try to deliver!

I love this photo that John captured and it makes me think of joyful singing immediately! Curiously I found this description of how the marsh wren sings: "...It sings a rapid-fire gurgling, trilling, and buzzy song from the depths of the marsh where its secretive life unfolds..."

It's true, my life may have its own secretive moments but so far I don't gurgle too much while singing. Ha!

Regarding the music we will share...I have pulled out a couple older books of charts which include some of these great standards:
Witchcraft, I Wish You Love, I'm Glad There Is You, Too Close For Comfort, Wouldn't It Be Loverly, If I Should Lose You, But Not For Me, How Little We Know, and an old hand written chart I made for the beautiful standard "Jim" that I used to sing with pianist Linton Garner many years ago. So many songs! Sometimes those songs bring back memories and other times they just connect with current situations. I love that about music. It's the thread of life.

I feel very pleased and proud of all of the vocalists who worked very hard in our special showcase presentation of solo songs and duets singing with the Zawa all-star band last Sunday. It takes courage and determination and practice to be present in the moment with the band and with the audience. Bravo everyone!
Thank you Michael Dunn and Don Kellett and Joseph Bourchier and Edgar for the warm welcome and musical support and thank you Susan for the invitation. 💕

Thank you G-man for capturing these moments in photographs 🎵
