Last Thursday was the culminating event for the semester-long Empty Bowls class I have been teaching since January. It was a momentous effort with the expected ups and downs of a brand new course with so many constituents and no pre-existing road map. There was no going back when, early in the term, we sold all 200 tickets in 6 days! My small but mighty group of students made some fabulous work. Each student made 45 bowls over the course of the semester. They were made out of both earthenware and stoneware clay. They were formed using paper patterns, bisque molds, slip casting techniques, and the potter’s wheel. Every student had a unique aesthetic and perspective, making each bowl distinctly different and treasured in their new homes. I had so much support from the college. Thanks to everyone who had our backs, lent expertise, and made E.B. a success. It was a huge undertaking, and I couldn’t have done it without you all. Deep gratitude to Jessica Tomlinson and Pam Ryder for being my partners in crime. Thank you for making this event so special, smooth, and heartfelt. Pam’s daughter, Hannah Ryder (Executive Chef at Twelve), knocked it out of the park with her signature dish of MaineGrains Farro Risotto, Twelve made Italian Sausage and Broccolini with Preserved Lemon. There were numerous takeaways, but one of the biggest was that people are eager to do good things and so thankful to be given the opportunity to effect change. Together, we raised $6,500 for Wayside Food Programs here in Portland. We did a really good thing for our community on so many levels.... and that feels great. @mecaart @meca_ceramics @hannahcooksfood @twelvemaine @jessicajanetomlinson @waysidefoodprograms @signed.bysamiyah @margohalverson @bookworm116 @a.kclay @reid_a_art @piper.doesart @bessa.smith.arts @rvl__art #emptybowls taken in Maine College of Art & Design by @karired

Tickets are all sold out for our Empty Bowl event this coming May 1st. The students knocked it out of the park; this is just a quick selection of the over 200 bowls made for the event that is raising money for @waysidefoodprograms . If you didn’t get a ticket we will hope to see you next time and if you did get a ticket we also hope to see you next time as these bowls are too good to only have one! Big shout out to @karired and Jessica Tomlinson in the artist at work office for making this all happen! taken in Maine College of Art & Design by @karired

Although school meal programs provide many children with breakfast and lunch, many children go hungry in the evenings, during weekends and over school breaks- especially the summer months. Schools are the most convenient place for children to access healthy food that might not be available at home. The Locker Project in South Portland connects food-insecure children and families in Maine with nourishing food to improve their learning capacity, health, and future. They distribute staples as well as donated and rescued fresh food at more than 40 preschools, schools and neighborhood sites in Cumberland County.

Our second volunteer experience was spent at The Locker Project. We learned about how the organization began, how hunger affects learning outcomes due to school absenteeism, behavior problems, and serious health issues. Many of which can be addressed in large part by simply helping kids access the nutrition they need to thrive. We packed oodles of take home bags for kids and families and banana boxes for social workers and family advocates to distribute. Again we were flooded with a deep sense of gratitude and accomplishment. But sad that people are hungry. With every volunteer effort it becomes more and more clear- There is an excess of healthy food in this world. No one should go hungry. We need to create better systems and reevaluate the ease at which we turn healthy food into waste . @lockerprojectmaine @meca_ceramics #emptybowls #radasch #mainecollegeofart #nooneshouldgohungry by @karired

Empty Bowls is a grassroots event designed to combat hunger. It raises awareness and funds by providing attendees with a hearty meal, a handmade bowl, and a metaphorical reminder of hunger—the “Empty Bowl.”  200 Tickets are on sale now for MECA&D’s Empty Bowl event. It will occur on Thursday, May 1 from 5:30 to 7:00 pm., there are 2 seatings. Guest chef Hannah Ryder of Portland’s Twelve restaurant will create a signature dish. The link to purchase tickets is in my bio.

The semester-long Empty Bowls class at Maine College of Art and Design is  part making,  part public engagement, and  part event planning. So far this semester, the class has spent 4 days volunteering in the greater Portland community. Our first visit was to Wayside Food Programs in Portland. Wayside reclaims food to reduce waste, fight hunger, and strengthen community through volunteer-driven programming and a collaborative, cross-industry network of partners in Southern Maine. We spent 2 days working in the kitchen (making a community meal) and in the warehouse (sorting a giant pallet of rescued food and home goods from a local grocery store).

There are many ways to feel good in the world, but there are very few that nourish the soul in a profound way. The deep sense of gratitude, and accomplishment we felt when we were finished with our shift was unlike anything I have ever felt. We were buzzing the entire ride back to school- we felt SO genuinely good.  It was  empowering to know that we made a difference that day. What a gift to share it with my students. #emptybowls #nooneshouldgohungry #radasch #mainecollegeofartanddesign @waysidefoodprograms @meca_ceramics taken in Maine College of Art & Design by @karired

This semester I am teaching the first ever Empty Bowls class at Maine College of Art and Design. It is a dream come true. I have always thought @mecaart and @meca_ceramics would be a place this event would thrive. The class is part making, part public engagement and part event planning. We are not only making joyful objects but we are trying to build a better future for our community. I will continue to post about what my fabulous students are up to throughout the semester. I have so many amazing things to share. In the meantime, please save the date for Thursdays May 1st . I will let you all know when tickets are available to purchase online in a few weeks. đŸ§«đŸ„„â€ïž taken in Maine College of Art & Design by @karired
