There Is a "Black Hole" in Understanding Zionism

Ana Maria Monjardino left CNN in October 2023, after deciding she could no longer reconcile her ethics with the organisation’s coverage of Israel and Palestine.

In this episode of The Walkout, Ana Maria reflects on her time inside CNN, the challenges of platforming Palestinian voices in mainstream media, why she ultimately resigned, and what she learned about journalism after leaving one of the world's biggest news organisations.

We also discuss independent journalism, impartiality and objectivity, and Ana Maria's subsequent reporting on Palestine-Israel in Latin America.

The failures in the BBC’s coverage of Gaza cannot be fixed through small editorial changes alone, argues former BBC journalist Karishma Patel.

Speaking to Palestine Deep Dive’s Ahmed Alnaouq, she explains that meaningful change requires “a wholesale shift”: journalists in leadership who are committed to protecting the journalistic process, freedom from political pressure, safeguards for staff who challenge editorial decisions, secure contracts, and greater investment in specialist knowledge.

For Karishma, however, the question is no longer simply what needs to change. The question is whether there is the will to make them happen. by @karishmapatel1

What would compel a journalist who worked for years to reach a newsroom like the BBC, CNN or Reuters to eventually walk away from it?

That question is at the heart of The Walkout, a new Palestine Deep Dive podcast series presented by former BBC journalist Karishma Patel.

In the first instalment, Patel explains that she wants to “paint a picture of what these different newsrooms have been like since October 2023” and give those journalists the opportunity to tell their stories. by @karishmapatel1
