Turns out the hardest part wasn’t the gray hair. It was learning to trust the process long enough to see what was possible on the other side.

A year ago, I made the decision to stop coloring my hair. I started growing out my grays in June 2024 and decided to cut it short in June 2025 so it could grow in evenly. My hair had always been long, and letting go of that took more adjustment than I expected. With time, I learned to embrace it, remembering that hair grows back and that, like most things in life, this was just a season of transition. ✨

I think that was the hardest part of growing it out, not knowing what was underneath all those years of dye. Two years later, I’m really glad I gave it a chance. The color, the pattern, how much white I have in the front, none of it was something I could predict when I started. If you’re in that awkward grow-out stage right now, keep going. You might be surprised by what’s waiting underneath.

After losing Scarlette in March, I wasn’t sure when I’d be ready for another dog. Seventeen years with her was a huge part of my life. Then Benny came along in August and brought back all the things I didn’t realize I missed, including the chaos. He’s been a handful, but he’s made me laugh again in ways I really needed. I still miss Scar every day. I’m just really happy he’s here. 🤍

We’ll happily plan a trip around good food, and Sylva, NC gave us plenty of reasons to come back. We found this little mountain town on our way home from Bryson City last year and returned for our birthday trip, this time with more time to eat, browse the bookstores, and enjoy the fall colors.

About three hours from Charlotte. Save this for a mountain weekend, and please don’t skip Dalaya. I’m still thinking about that meal.

I don’t think growing out my gray hair was necessarily about healing, but I do think I had to get to a certain place in my life to finally feel comfortable enough to do it. I spent most of my 20s and 30s coloring my hair because that’s just what I thought I was supposed to do. I started going gray early in my 20s and the idea of letting it grow out, especially while I was still young, never really crossed my mind. But somewhere along the way, I stopped caring so much about what I was supposed to look like at a certain age. I turned 40, stopped coloring my hair, and decided to see what happened.

It’s been over two years now, and I still have days when I look in the mirror and wonder if I look older than I actually am. I’m not going to pretend that feeling completely goes away. But I also really love my hair now, and I love that I gave myself the chance to see what it looked like naturally. Healing isn’t about suddenly loving everything about yourself, it can just be getting to a point where you stop feeling like you have to change so much of yourself to feel good.

I know Sophie already shared some of these, but there are so many beautiful shots that I wanted them to live here too. Michael and I haven’t had professional photos taken since our wedding five years ago, and I really wanted to capture this stage of our lives. So much has changed since then. We moved across the country from California to Charlotte, started building a life here, got ourselves some chickens, welcomed a new puppy, and somewhere in between all of that, we had to say goodbye to our sweet Scarlette. There’s been a lot of happiness, but also a lot of grief. I miss my family more than I can explain sometimes, and we’re still figuring out what this chapter of our lives looks like. It’s a different life than maybe we once imagined, just the two of us, and there’s so much about it that I love. I think we get so used to documenting the big milestones. Weddings, engagements, pregnancies, babies, all those moments that feel like they deserve professional photos. But what about everything in between? What about the years when you’re just living, adjusting, grieving things, finding happiness in unexpected places and realizing how much your life has changed?

I wanted to remember this version of us. Our life in Charlotte, our little home, and everything that comes with it. Because grief and happiness can coexist, and I think this stage of our lives deserves to be remembered too. So I hope you take the photos, even if there isn’t a big milestone or anything to celebrate. You don’t need a reason other than wanting to remember your life as it is right now. I love these photos so much. Thank you, @sophiemorris.photo for capturing us exactly where we are in life right now.

It’s been over two years since I stopped coloring my hair, and as much as I love my grays now, I still have moments when I question my decision. Sometimes I’ll see other women my age with their beautiful colored hair and wonder if mine makes me look older. I know that’s not necessarily true, but I’d be lying if I said those thoughts never crossed my mind.

Recently, a little girl who was probably around 10 years old told me my hair looked like her grandma’s, and honestly, I couldn’t even blame her! She’s probably never seen many women in their early 40s with hair as gray as mine. We start associating gray hair with being old. Not necessarily because anyone is intentionally teaching us that, but because that’s mostly what we’ve grown up seeing. I actually hope she starts seeing more women my age embracing their natural hair so that by the time she’s older, gray hair isn’t something she automatically associates with being a grandma. And I think that’s also why growing out your grays in your 40s can be a little conflicting. I still feel young, I take care of myself, and I genuinely enjoy this stage of my life, but sometimes I look in the mirror and have to remind myself that having gray hair doesn’t change any of that.

I also want women who are thinking about growing theirs out to know that you don’t have to be completely confident about it before you start. Just try it and see how you feel. You can always go back to coloring it, and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that either. I’m over two years into this journey, and while I wouldn’t change my decision, I’m still human and have my moments. Do you ever find yourself comparing your hair to other women your age?

Sunday Night Football was way past my bedtime, but I’m a supportive wife and wasn’t going to miss the Panthers having a prime time spot!

Quick GRWM with my PUR foundation + my usual makeup, and thankfully it’s finally getting cooler in Charlotte because my hair absolutely needed to be washed, so I threw on a beanie to keep it tamed. Go Panthers! 🏈

Quick ponytail, quick makeup and out the door. I mixed my Supergoop! tinted moisturizer with a little PÜR foundation for slightly more coverage, added some blush and that’s pretty much it. Also loving these @arachne_hairtools hair ties and clips they sent me, they match my silver hair so well and are perfect for throwing my hair up for yoga. 🤍

My grays definitely take more work now that my hair is fully grown out. It’s drier, frizzier and I’ve had to figure out what products actually work for it. But I’ve gotten pretty good at knowing what my hair needs and I actually enjoy taking care of it now. And at this point, I really don’t care if someone thinks I should color it. I like it. That’s enough for me. 🤍
